I have a customer who is looking to pay us by card, but at the moment we don't have this facility. This is something we would only use a handful of times per year. Is anyone else in a similar situation and what do you use. My bank is looking to charge a monthly fee for the facility which we wont use every month.

I understand your situation. Why pay a monthly fee for a card reader that you will only use a few times per year?

Maybe another option is Paypal's card reader. Think it's a one off fee for the merchant terminal (think about £35) as of this post date - lets you accept card and contactless payments without monthly fees. Think there is a transaction fee though

Can you take the payments online? If so, then no set-up fee, no monthly fee, no equipment to buy, no PCI to pay, just pay-as-you-go.

You could start out with a PAYG reader connected to your phone depending on service coverage. However, the % rates you pay are going to be more.

If you start to get regular requests for cards then it might be worth getting a full merchant account/terminal quote as the rates will be lower (especially on Debit cards as most PAYG readers charge the same regardless of card type despite the interchange rates from Visa/MasterCard being much lower on Debit cards than Credit cards).
