Can't make the jump..

Everytime I switch on the TV and hear more and more about the economy blah blah blah... this puts me off starting up.

I have been trialing bits out with my new venture and has worked extremely well but I get itchy feet when I think 'today is the day I make the big jump and go full time live!'

Anyone else feel the same, i'm sure its not just me.
Don't get me wrong what my plans are will earn me a good sum of money but I seem to be only 95% 'there'.
Any advice?? (apart from don't turn on TV)

I'm sure even people who have been running very good businesses for a long time still get that feeling from the media propaganda. Remeber house prices still really have not dropped that much......DESPITE what you may read daily....

Check out zoopla.com they will show you what houses have sold at. Houses are still generally worth more than they were 3 years ago. And that really is not a long time ago!!!

Unfortunately you have to realise the general public is stupid and what is said in the news will effect what is happening with this 'credit crunch' thing right now.

It would be very very difficult to start up in my current employment. I have to travel about to buy stock etc.. I have looked for part time employment to cover myself but I need flexible hours really and there doesn't seem to be many around my area.
It feels like all or nothing.
Basically I sell antiques & collectables on the net and I have brought some pieces over the few weeks and has gone very well but not enough to give up work at the moment. As local places are limited I need to travel a little to buy more in bulk.

To be honest, if i was starting my own business now (which is a home cleaning business i have had for nearly 4 years) i wouldnt do it. Ive been fairly ok so far, but i wouldnt like to start right now.

These low skill jobs are not 2 a penny these days. When i advertise for a cleaner now i get so many phone calls, i cant dope with the demand. Compaired with about 2/3 calls a year ago.

Its typical propaganda type knee jerk reactions that cause one extreame or the other...it really wears thin when you can see past all this crap.

At the moment I do this as my job and to be honest we are really busy. We sell all over the world an there doesn't seem to a down turn on our sales. (i'm assuming not everyone is skint)

I wouldn't be selling through a 'shop front ' it would be in my front room. So the over heads are low to start.

I suppose the problem is, I know what i'm doing in respect of buying/selling etc.. but I think I need support on the business side.

I totally agree and I'm currently working my notice (9 days to go, yippee!).

Life doesn't stop in a recession, despite what the media would have us believe and if we all started rationing and taking to our beds the slump really would wipe out the economy. I wouldn't recommend being foolhardy and starting a business that you hadn't done the groundwork for, but if you believe in it and the signs are good, don't let media hype and the recession deter you.

Thats the problem I agree with you, I brought a plate the other day for £2 and sold for £160. Just because the person didn't know what it was but I did and made a tidy sum.

I've been trying to run the business with my partner over the last 12 months whilst working full time and it's been a nightmare, I'm shattered from all the late nights. It's got to the stage where the growth will be restricted if I don't give it my full attention -especially as a large part of the business is arranging holidays, a bit of a struggle when I get such a limited entitlement in employment. I handed my notice in at the end of December and have never felt happier, even though I'm giving up a very good salary. I can't wait to be able to devote myself full time to our business, I've so many ideas that I just haven't had the chance to put into action. Fortunately the signs have been very good too, we couldn't fulfill demand last year and we're seeing even higher demand this year.

The business is my passion for many reasons and failure just isn't an option in this - and I just hope I can post on here this time next year that I was right !

I wish I had started my own business ten years ago. It's not easy but then I always worked hard for my employer. Hell, the hours I gave them!! You say you know stuff and are good at it. Same here, but it still took a lot of courage to jump.

There are a lot of people to give you advice and encouragement here in this forum. Providing you can handle your bills for a while while things take shape what have you got to lose?

I am looking into franchises at this moment in time and feel that this will be a good route for me to take.
