Cancelling BT Contract

Hi,

I will be moving home soon and was wondering if I can cancel my BT contract early and without penalty. I know BT say that

If we are not able to provide the service at your new address, and you are still within your minimum period, you will not have to pay a charge for ending the service within the minimum period

My new home had (according to BT) has a max broadband speed of 5Mb whilst at my current address I have 17Mb

Would this count as a valid argument that BT cannot provide "the" service at my new address?

Unless your contract mentions a guaranteed speed then I doubt it very much.

The order was placed over the phone, but during the order process they did a line test and told me that I would get a download speed of up to 17Mb and asked "is this ok?"

also, just read from their FAQ

If you are moving home and taking all your BT products with you, there will be no charges. If BT is unable to provide any of your existing products at your new address, you will not be held to term for these products.
If you want to cancel one or more of your BT products when you move home, you will need to give us 30 days' notice, otherwise early termination charges will apply.

So if I give them more than 30 days notice informing them of the move then I can cancel my BT contract early without any penalty for ending the contract early. Right?

It says that if BT cannot provide any of the products .... you will not be liable for those products. Whether the broadband speed is sufficient to cancel that part of the contract would depend on if the speed is specified. However, even if you can get out of the broadband, it doesn't seem to me that you can get out of the basic telephone service on that basis.

The first step is to surely contact them and ask

Why not move with the products and save yourself all this grief?

You may even find that no other broadband company can provide a better speed in your new area than BT.

Broadband speeds in my area are the same whoever is the supplier (currently BT and moving to Orange) and they are only 2MB with both companies!! (Rubbish for someone working from home).

Very true, unless you can move to Fibre then whoever you go with will have the same issue as BT.
