Cancel yell.com advert

Hello

Does anyone know how, or if it is possible to cancel a yell.com contract? I am on what they class as 'pay as you go' but as far as I can gather that is for their benefit rather than mine. I am 4 months into a 12 month contract which so far has been a complete waste of time. I can't find any information anywhere with regards to how to cancel the contract. I would appreciate any help anyone can give.

When I had my 12 month contract last year....I tried to cancel and they had great joy in telling me I couldnt. I had to endure the biggest waste of ad spend with them....no results and smug Yell.com peeps on the phone. They grovelled to get me back but that was my payback time....didnt help during the contract though. Not sure if its any different now however.

Hello; thanks for your response. I am running a PAT Testing business, and when I set up the yell.com account it was after lots of consideration, and negotiating, what I was promised and what I have got where 2 totally different things. They reckoned there were thousands of hits every month for my service, and yet so far there have been 161 in 4 months, of which I have got 6 clicks related to my area, and from that 0 clients! All this for more than £70 a month which I would much rather spend elsewhere. I can't seem to get hold of the terms and conditions, and can't find anything anywhere that tells me a cancellation procedure.

I keep hearing stories now from so many people that find yell a waste of time and really don't know what to do. Thanks for your message. If anyone else can give me an answer it would be appreciated

I was also thinking to advertise on yell.com, now I won't. Whats the point in advertising when you can't go out of contract anytime you want. Again you people are right from the result point of view. Its not outstanding. I think the best alternative is to spend some money on seo.

I'm amazed so many people have been drawn in by Yell's sales people and ended up wasting their money. I've seen it happening for years.

Funny thing is, for only a part of the cost of a Yell ad, you could get your site optimised with brand new sales copy and permanently increase your sales far more than the Yell ad ever could.

so many suggestions, i will look into them. It's a shame yell is such a sham; they are supposed to be a reputable company; if only I knew what I know now I would be £300 richer!

Anyone planning on advertising with them - please don't

draelectricals, unfortunately, you're not on your own in falling for their sales spiel. they've got a recognisable & trusted (until you dig around a bit) brand that they continue to trade on. these days, they very rarely deliver what they promise...

hope you get it sorted :)

btw, thread title is awesome!, how many searches in google for that i wonder :D

Did you get anything in writing as to the number of enquiries you would get (not your business area). I suspect not, but if you did, you could terminate for breach of contract on their part, although they may have something in their terms that they have a right to remedy thier breach - basically means they have time to make the contract work.

I'd just put it down to an expensive lesson and sleep soundly knowing you've stopped others making the same mistake by posting here:D

Yell didn't get where they are today by letting advertisers escape from their contracts. I suggest you're stuck with it unless you want to go through legal wrangling about being mis-sold or lied to at the start. Might be better to try to work with Yell by saying you're not going to renew unless results improve, and can they do anything to help you out, maybe increase your visibility on the site, list you in other business categories or whatever. It doesn't cost them anything to do this, and if they think you might keep paying they may agree. Better than nothing.

Check the contractual T's & C's to make sure you do escape from the contract at the earliest opportunity, don't leave it for 12 months and then find they've got a 6-month notice period!

It never ceases to amaze me the amount of times I open a thread on Yell and read the usual lynch-mob baying for the blood of internet directories.

Whilst I can see that some posters on this thread have physically spent their own money advertising with Yell and not garnered the results they wanted, once again the majority of the criticism and what appears to be genuine hate comes from people and companies who have gained some sort of proxy hatred for Yell through OTHER PEOPLE's experiences, which I find fundamentally wrong.

The replies mostly consist of people opportunistically plugging their own directories in response to the Yell complaint, even though in many cases they couldn't dream of matching the reach of a big directory such as Yell.

If it's not the opportunistic replies, it's the one's where companies who've never advertised with them tell others how horrible it is.

The only thing I will probably say ad sales people can be guity of is the smash and grab mentality - i.e selling you a cheap advert under a classification and area where there are already 50 people advertising, rendering the advert useless before it's even begun.

I'll give you an example - I requested stats from Yell a couple of months back for a client of mine in London who was looking for domestic cleaning leads. He'd looked on their site and wanted to do a £300 weblink. Problem was, when I got the stats from Yell, those ads were getting about 89 views a month each - Utterly pathetic and nearly impossible to get a return on.

They also gave me stats for their heavyweight ads - there was actually just the one in the part of London he was in - and it was seen on average 15,000+ per month! The heavyweight ad was much more expensive but worth it for the return.

....and to those of you peddling the myth about Yell 'never working' and so on, I'll happily supply with you with the details of numerous companies who I know it DOES work for.

strange post - you can either cancel it or you cant - have you tried asking them:|:| pay as you go if thats what your'e on is cancellable, just cancel it:rolleyes: and whilst I'm not a fan of Yell like BTDS is, I've used them, it didnt work, it hardly cost me anything to find out and for me they didnt put a foot wrong....

Me too Scott, I can only put it down to the power of the brand, people have instant recognition of it so think it's good so they are half sold when the salesman comes knocking or vice versa.
Spot on re optimising your website btw

ON placing a costly advert on Yell.com I later found it seems to over ride my "Google Places" / "Google maps" presence. What a complete waste of time yell is. They keep on changing the key words I wanted without permission, then when I call them to cancel my account (it is paid in advance for another 5 months) they tell me they cannot cancel it. I have told them they can keep the balance of the monies etc.... but to no avail..

My advice is never go near yell.com, a good optimized website will do you far more better and bring youmore business.

cheers

Bill
