Can you flip websites names without doing work on them?

Maybe I am asking the impossible, but can this be done?
To me it seems like something which is for the very IT savy - I.e. People buy a name/site->do it up->sell it = profit.

However, would it be possible to literally buy the name www.BusinessUKF.com (example) for £20 and try selling just the name for £40? So basically you pay for nothing but the rights and hope to sell it to someone who wants the specific name?

I assume 99% of people are IT savy, so will 'do up' the site then flip it - but can the method of buying the domain name only be done successfully? I.e. does anyone have experience with this or is it near impossible?
Thanks.

Yes there are people that do this. How successful you are depends on how good you are at picking domains that will be in demand or are a strong brand, how quickly you sell them and how you promote them. It is with any product you have to have your audience. However it does help to put a site or at least landing page on the domain you buy.

However you may find your margin isn't worth it by the time you have researched and found available domains. If you don't have a natural picker, an instinct for brands then I would look for a different product to concentrate on marketing as you will hit problems finding brands that you can flip successfully especially with an ever decreasing supply.

Hope this helps

I thought about this, and registered a load of i phone 5 web names, and firekindles names, put them on sedo, and over a year later no interest. I guess really to sell a sight these days it not about the name its more about the traffic.

I buy and sell quite a few mainly 4 letter .co.uk (and the odd .com) domains which I sell on Acorn Domains (.coms go on Sedo) etc. Its really not worth the hassle of bothering with the websites as people only want the names so I just deleat the site and resell the domain. Anyone with half a brain will ingore any given traffic stats as its to easy to inflate these figures to make any site seem more valuable. I sell a lot more .co.uk domains then .com but thats probably because they are cheaper than .com. Most of the domains I get sell for less less £2.5k with most going for around £1k or less!

Thanks for the replies!

I was thinking something like 'flippa.com'.
Would selling on there be like ebay for websites? I.e. it gets you a great market? Thanks.
flippa is awful. I got banned 2 months ago for refusing to enter into a sale with a scammer. I cannot login, they send me 50 emails a day as if I was an active user on there. Most domains get relisted about 3 times. Most sites are worthless domains with a free affiliate script installed. flights/cars/hotel bookings are a common one.

many probably buy a website for the "bespoke script" but its not, its freely available.
