Is it possible for someone to be employed by a company for one job but also be payed as a sole trader for another job at the same company?

For example;
Employed for 14 hours a week at £13.50 per hour on PAYE as a HR Assistant.
Also self-employed by the same company for £3700 per month (working 31 hours a week) on a 9 month contract in a different part of the business. The individual has started his own sole trader business providing marketing assistance and will be doing this for the company during this 9 month contract.

The situation is that he is currently a full time HR Assistant for the company, but it has been agreed that he can reduce his hours and continue working at the company whilst starting his own business. Then the company decided that actually they need some marketing assistance whilst an employee is on maternity leave, so why not engage him as a sub contractor.

Just not sure whether this is possible? The contact has not yet been signed.

Can't see why the company wouldn't just employ someone full time if they are going to pay those sort of rates.
£27k seems pretty high for a HR Assistant but £27.50ph for a marketing assistant self employed (i did 3700*12/52/31) is rule of thumb about the same as £27.5k PAYE so what you have is a £27.5k person splitting their time between 2 roles, 1 perm Part time and one as a fixed term contract delivered through a different relationship
