SEO is not difficult to learn but it is vast, it is time consuming as it is campaign based in nature as well and also feedback comes late so it's hard to know a true positive to an action.
I guess it's attractive to con men as it's hard to say if they did anything and with the delay they are long gone.

hey Leonore, you can definitely optimise yourself in terms of google map listing / google my business however if you also want to rank in organic search listings then you will need to understand which keywords are best (somewhere on the spectrum of volume and competition) and then learn how to do solid on-page SEO by putting these keywords in the right places with the right frequency (and not over-optimising). Neil Patel has some great guides. Cheers
