I would agree with akirk. Usable design is everything. An appealable design doesn't have to be over the the top but is still inviting to the consumer.

To put things into perspective, If you were to set up two different sites each containing the same products and at the same price, the one that is more aesthetically pleasing is far more likely to gain the trust of the consumer and therefore likely to gain a greater number of sales.

It is so much more than design but the imagery you use. There is a tendency to use images that represent the product you sell (which is sometimes the right thing to do) rather than what people are buying.

I also think where you use human images, the choices are crucial. You can have images that look great but dont give a buy signal.

Oh its a massive subject isnt it.

Good website design will produce better conversion results, but good web design isn't about making things look pretty. Good web design is about:

  • Appearing professional
  • Presenting your information in the format that is the most easy to interpret and use for your audience - i.e. being accessible.
  • Understanding how your audience react to your website design - testing design features and see if they produce an increase or decrease in goals achieved.
  • Optimising the website design so that only features that are proven to increase goals achieved are kept.
  • Providing the intended perception for your brand that best suits your target audience - no point in building an image for your business suited for body builders if you are selling to mums (unless they are female body builders of course ;-) )

As you see, good web design is as much of a science as an art.

Is it true that appealing website can have better sales than a commonly designed website?

Yes. Everything I have learnt over the last 15 years suggests a combination of clever eye-candy, direct call to actions, intuitive site design and fast loading web pages - to mention just a few things - will lead to more conversions.

This is the holy-grail of ecommerce web design.

Rich.

I have a question from all of you. Is it true that appealing website can have better sales than a commonly designed website?

In my opinion:

Bad design and rubbish content = poor sales
Good design and rubbish content = poor sales
Okay design and good content = good sales
Good design and good content = good sales - the best potential

Making someone stop and do something is the best web-design. A single page that encourages someone to stop surfing from one site to another and take some kind action is far better than a beautifully presented website with lovely flash graphics etc.

Most people search the net with a need in mind. They are looking for the answer to something, they want to find the cheapest price, .... If your site can stay STOP searching you have found the answer and then get them to leave their email address, make a call, watch a video ... you have created a lead and a lead handled carefully lead to sale which leads to a recommendation which leads to a referral which leads to a successful website. All you need is a page of simple text. It is easy cheap and effective if you know how.
