Hello - we're a small start up company selling children's tights. We've got some fab designs but seem to be unable to find a manufacturer who's able to make to a sufficiently high quality.

We've tried a number of different companies in Turkey and China (generally found thro Alibaba) but have always been disappointed by the quality of sample product provided - either the fabrics not good enough or the sewing is poor and frays or sometimes both.

So we're hoping that forum members just might be able to help - can anyone recommend a really good manufacturer? Or have any pointers/advice as to how we might go about finding one?

We'd be really grateful for any advice as we're now feel increasingly frustrated that we'll ever be able to get the product good enough to begin selling.

Thanks in advance!

Hi oh good luck i really think you are on to a winner, i have struggled and struggled getting good tights for my children with the loss of woolies and most of the major stores seem to be low stocking on them it is proving hard, also have you thought of good over the knee socks too? just a thought,
As for sourcing there are a lot of companies in malaysa and india that do textile items i used to purchase housewares and we had fabric items crossign over, its a shame you have just missed spring fair and ambiente in frankfurt you would have picked up some there, if you are really struggling let me know and pm me and i will see what i can dig up for you, but not sure if they are clothing suppliers, but it wouldn't hurt to ask :)
thanks

I think the problem is that unless you order them in absolutely massive quantities, you are either going to have to pay a hefty price which the general public are not prepared to pay or the quality is not going to be good enough.

For good quality tights you should be looking to Spain rather than China.

Sarah - thanks for your encouragement and optimism!

Deniser - you sounded rather more pessimistic. Do you really think it'll be impossible to find a manufacturer who will provide high enough quality at the volumes we'll be ordering? (probably 2,000 pairs initially)

Any other specific suggestions from forum members - really, really welcome.

I only say that because I have tried to have tights manufactured myself although nylon not knitted.

I found that we needed to order 150 dozs/size/color/designs for tights which is 1800 per colour per size so to get a proper range of sizes and designs you are looking at huge quantities.

There are several tights manufacturers in Spain who will make smaller quantities but then you are looking at a retail price of £15-20 per pair which people are reluctant to buy unless part of an outfit like this:

I may be wrong but that is my experience so far.

Deniser - wow that's alot to pay for an outfit for a little person - can't imagine there's that many indulgent parents out there! So don't think Spain will be a goer...

You may be right with your advice - just discovering how hard it is to start small when you're trying to compete against so many big players. But having said that we are really determined to at least give this a go - and I think we have potentially a really good product - so I guess we'll have to persist for a little while at least.

Peter - thanks for your links too but its really manufacturers we're looking forward (who'll make tights to our designs) rather than wholesalers to buy from.

Hi Still think your onto a good idea,
i know freight is a big problem, however we always use road freight from companies in Europe and that was a lot cheaper especially if we only ordered a small delivery and you can arrange collection from the warehouse or port and then the freight company can tell you in advance the whole cost to you back to your door, i can give you a couple of companies if you like,
For companies further afield i am sure you could combine with a split container called lcl and that is another way of bringing in smaller amounts, but this route will be more expensive, however you may be able to work with it,
for fabric areas malaysia is a up coming place for fabrics, as well as india and i am sure china, but have you tried turkey??
i wish you all the best and you never know till you try and also it may take a couple of shipments before you start to clear the higher quantities and it makes it more viable but keep at it and if i can be of amy help just shout :)

hello, i am new,and i am from China. I think you maybe choose some famous manufactures having large scale, high reputation and advanced technology level. As China is developing, she has lots of and different level's manufactures. Also, there must be numerable manufactures that meet you need. Trust me, trust China. This linda from fashionaaa com, if have any questions, feel free to contact me:fashionjoin(at)hotmail com

Hi Charlotte
I'm not going to go into too much detail, but I'm about to launch a new children's tights brand later this year and am finally just in the process of manufacturing! There's definitely a gap in the market and currently no funky designs with a bit of an edge if you like your child to be dressed individually. It took me a long time (approx 10 months) to find the right manufacturer and I was surprised to find NONE in the UK! Unfortunately the company Im using doesnt deal with orders under 3000 pieces! There is always room for competition so I hope you push forward with your ideas and find the right manufacturer also, there are a multitude of them out there it's just a painstakingly difficult task to find the right one to work with but it is dooable....the only way round it I found was to order larger quantities! Im just hoping that my background in marketing & PR will help me shift it all! Good Luck
