Can anyone other than OP mark a question as 'answered'?

I posted a thread as a question last night and I got a couple of replies.

I am fairly certain I did not mark either one as "solution", but I was surprised to see that one of them was marked as such anway.

Hence the question in the title - if I post a thread as a question, can anyone other than me mark a question as 'answered'?

Only the OP can from membership, but admin can also which happens if a question is left not marked as solved for a while.

Well, a few points here
  • In my case, I posted the question yesterday and somebody marked it as "answered" today. What would be a reasonable elapsed time between question and marking as "answered"for admins/mods?
  • won't admin/mods marking something as answered stifle further potential replies from others? (potential contributors may think "oh well, it's been answered, not worth bothering adding my 2p")
  • how does an admin know if the question has been answered to OP's satisfaction - there may not be enough clarity sometimes?

I think this was an error as usually its if the question has been left without being marked for a few weeks (a month or so) and the OP hasn't come back to mark it.
Thanks Ozzy, but I think the concept of admins/mods that should - as a matter of policy - decide if a question has been answered or not should be reviewed, as per my points above.

Unless there's a reason (technical or otherwise) you don't want to leave questions not marked as answered for too long?

There is a technical reason we don’t want questions left without an answer being assigned. Isn’t always possible to assign one but where possible one ideally needs to be chosen as that’s how the thing works.

I think this thread is a good example of what I was saying before - I understand your points but there is no post I would mark as "solution" here.
Still not offended - but what else can I add?
I did wonder whether I was trying to answer the same question. ?

Probably explains why so few are marked as answered. I’ve only ever asked one question and the above is of no help at all in trying to mark one reply as answered. Perhaps the administrators have different settings and forget about us.

    Hi @Pi Daybooks

I am slightly confused - are you talking about this thread here, or are you referring to the one that I opened up yesterday and to which you kindly replied?

By the by, as another example of why it's odd that somebody else answers for you:

the thread in question I mentioned in the OP is this one about Director's expenses.

Both answers from @Pi Daybooks and @Elliot Green are - in my view - good answers. Each answer is providing a different - but valuable - angle to me.

Since you can't mark more than one post as "solution" in a given thread of yours, marking either answer as "solution" in the case above would be wrong because of the above.

Besides, if other accountants want to contribute with their own point of view I wouln't want them to infer the thread is done, as such.

Yes it was as I noticed it as marked as “answered” and presumed it was done so by admin as there appears no guidance for users to do so.

On the subject matter there would be no difference other than I mentioned. It is true that there would be no “material” difference for tax purposes as there would none.
