Calling all Tearoom/Coffee shop owners

Hi there,

I am going to set up my own business of either a Tea Room or Coffee shop..I say either, because this i think will depend on location and the competion that is already in the area. Once I find a an area, and a property, I will complete my market research.

I could do with some 'direction' if you would be willing to help..

Yes absolutely. So many requests in here are very vague and having got into PM engagement with a few I find the authors are vague too. In getting clear you might even be able to solve the problem yourself. You would certainly be further forward in knowing precisely what the gap is. There are a lot of good helpful articles on "Cobweb". If you go into the HSBC business banking start-up section, I'm sure you get the option to download the ones most relevant to you.

Also, if you sign up here: www.seelplanner.co.uk you can download a sample business plan and see how others would do what you're doing.

For your kind of business, location is key. If you don't get the passing trade, you don't get the monies. And it's all about the monies!

Be unique. Offer something nobody else in the surrounding area does.
Offer lunch meals at lunchtime, and dinner meals at dinner time.

Get your market strategies going, and find lots of small and targeted prospects. For example, School teachers love to go to coffee shops for their lunch-break, or after school for that matter - they love a natter (as if they've not been doing that all day!).

Will you offer takeaway services?

Have you got money to invest in the business? If not, do you know where to source the capital? Are you willing to give up part of your social life and the luxuries of long paid holidays in exchange for the potential success of this business?

What will you do when it becomes a success? Will you employ people to help you run it?

The questions are endless, and the answers even more.
Have a scoot around these forums, and the above references I gave, and you should be a bit clearer in the things you'll have to do to get yourself going.

What is a godd reference point for these sorts of queries?

Good to see another business starting up so all the best with that. The one piece of advice I would give is change round your list of priorities. Rather than do "find an area, and a property, then complete my market research" it should be "do my market research to help me find my area and then find a property". If you do it that way, your research will help you to formulate a plan of action and may direct you away from a particular area to somewhere a lot more profitable. Just keep in your mind the saying, "People never plan to fail but often fail to plan".

Hi,

Your local council is the best place to start. There is a mine field if dos and don'ts with a food business, but your main number one place to start is with the health and hygiene offices, they will advise you on everything. Trading standards are also a must, they will advise you on packaging and food additive issues etc.

If you are not sure of direction maybe look into business that are already trading and are for sale. This may get you through the inital setup period and may prove a good way for you start running this sort of business without having to make all the setup decisons.
Or if you have not done this type of work before maybe get a job in a local coffee shop to see how it is run from inside. This will give you lots of tips and ideas for starting your own place in regards to useful kit and layout behind the counter.
