Bypassing affiliate networks

What does an affiliate network do, for publishers and for advertisers, that they cannot do for themselves.

I have been musing over the helpful and knowledgeable discussions in these forums, but not found an answer.

What are the snags, to cutting out the middleman, that I have overlooked.

How are you going to cut them out is my first question?

Are you also prepared to deal with hundreds if not thousands of afilliates? How are you going to manage paying them?

People who set up affiliates hope that affiliates spread the word.

Time, contact & numbers.

For a promoter an affiliate network can reach promoters easily, something it would take a long time to duplicate. It also manages all of the admin and is a single point of contact.

For an affiliate, networks access lots of offers.

For someone to duplicate this for themselves would take time & money.

Get on with what you are good at and let the experts manage the bits you are not good at.
