That was the headline of the Business Briefing email I received from The Times as I sat down for a lunch meeting today, and it caught my attention so much so that I needed to ask my guest to hold a moment as I quickly scanned the news.

    The Times said:
Rishi Sunak has taken an axe to the government’s unwieldy business department in a cabinet reshuffle whose scale has taken Westminster by surprise.

The current departments for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) and Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) have been carved into four new portfolios in an effort to reinvigorate Britain’s moribund economic growth.
This particular piece of news caught me off-guard as I wasn't expecting such a sweeping change, and considering the time left of the next GE the new departmental structure isn't going to have much if any time to get up to speed, I'm feeling uneasy about this change.

    Thoughts?

It's definitely an unexpected move and could be seen as a gamble.

Given the short time frame until the next GE, it will certainly be interesting to see how well this new departmental structure can deliver on its objectives.

I think it all boils down to having clarity of purpose, collaboration among stakeholders and a culture that encourages innovation. Having the right processes in place ensures that objectives are achievable and the proper resources are available. It looks like it could be an interesting period ahead!

    Let's see how things progress.

    What do you think?

I agree with that analysis entirely. No chance, then, given past and current experience.

My thoughts are that Bob got it bang on -
Deckchairs and Titanic come to mind!
I was talking to a money manager recently and he described the UK government as "children playing with matches".

I was reminded of a statement made by the Federal Reserve Bank that went "The US economy appears to be making a transition from the rapid rate of expansion experienced over the preceding several years to a more sustainable average pace of growth"

That statement was made in February 2007 and already back then the first CDOs and MBSs were struggling to sell and house prices had ceased to rise. Children playing with matches!

So let's look at where the Good Ship Great Britain is right now -
    • The prices for things we need to live is increasing rapidly - i.e. inflation.
    • At the same time, asset prices are now falling - deflation.
    • Gov. debt is partially linked to RPI - debt inflation.
    • Real GDP is falling - recession.
    • Nominal GDP is steady or even rising - inflation.
    • Assets falling leads to collateral falling leads to debt costs rising.
    • Falling collateral leads to money markets rehypothecating (pledging the same collateral to multiple creditors).
All that looks like an accident waiting to happen! Grinding stagflation if we are lucky!

We shall know when the real recession starts to bite when unemployment figures start to rise meaningfully. And that would be here and in the US. These things usually start in the US and the contagion spreads East.

This hapless government of schoolchildren has managed to have over 25% of its debts linked to RPI - which means that it can no longer easily inflate its debts away - a process known as financial repression.

If you want to survive the coming downturn and even prosper, have real assets - things that are built, mined, pumped out of the ground, or even the ground itself. You will also need real money (e.g. gold or silver coins) so that you can buy the distressed assets of people who are desperate.

But nobody will want your IP, your online business, your goodwill, your rented corner store, your crummy job as a consultant, or a warehouse full of cheap tat from China.

I think it all boils down to having clarity of purpose, collaboration among stakeholders and a culture that encourages innovation. Having the right processes in place ensures that objectives are achievable and the proper resources are available. It looks like it could be an interesting period ahead!
Those are the kind of platitudes that this Ship of Fools (aka government) has been spouting. What is needed is a government that, instead of whistling Dixie, actually faces reality.

Or as Ayn Rand put itYou can avoid reality, but you cannot avoid the consequences of avoiding reality.”

I was in Scotland last week for a Client AGM - 'The Economy' was uppermost as a topic of conversation.

For the last 6 Months I have able to observe from my 'Engine Room' in SE Asia - "Oh what a Circus, what a Show" comes to mind. The UK has become a laughing-stock!

My own opinion is that the UK will bypass a Recession! - Presently it is en-route for a full blown 'Depression!'

I think the chance of any dogmatic politician getting the conservative (with a small c) civil service to change direction of an entire department and move with a single purpose allied to that politicians is about the same as us sorting small nuclear fission reactors before the next GE

(a slightly less divisive politician might manage it over a longer time frame c5yrs but Shapps in 18 months zero chance)

Biden announced yesterday half a million jobs created last month, plus Decembers figures amended from half a million new jobs created to one million new jobs.

According to sleepy Joe, things are going great atm. We can only hope the USA drags us up with it, IF you believe the figures of course.

I wonder how Grant Shapps will pull off Energy Security AND Net Zero?

To do both is impossible right now.
With Doctor Dolittle's pushmepullyou of course!

Further evidence (if any was needed) that a 'Depression' is looming, came along yesterday (Wednesday). The largest Housing Developers in the UK have warned of 'Reduced Numbers,' for 2023/2024 - This is despite 300,000 PA being required, and announced.

Gove's Draft Planning Reforms (2022) still remain a 'Bugger's Muddle' and have NOT been revisited. However, the Department for Housing, Levelling-Up and Communities (or whatever it is called today), has announced an 'Inquiry into Frameworks!' Oddly, the Consultation Documents are either labelled 'Draft' or contain the word 'Preliminary' in the title!

"When all else fails - Let's announce a Framework!"

IIRC BEIS was formed in 2016, by merging Business Innovation and Skills (BIS) with the Department of Energy, plus Digital and the Research Councils, so the recent announcement is basically undoing that combination

I can't imagine many world leaders at the moment wanting to be straight up with the state of both domestic and global economies

Most seem to have their heads stuck in their arses whilst everything is ablaze around them

Sure i read yesterday the U.S gov is set to spend 870 BILLION merely serving its debt this year , how that can be seen as a good thing i don't know

I won't get started on the UK as well all know we are already well under the water despite the virtue signalling crap Rooshi is trying to spin over social media and the news

Given government doesn't produce any wealth and mostly destroys it, I'm only ever interested in hearing about plans for government to do less, not more i.e. sack more useless civil servants who do nothing but get in the way of wealth creation (some of whom are laughably tasked with "growing" the economy). I suspect the headcount could be halved in whatever new structure is created and it will not make a jot of difference to our GDP bar saving the taxpayers some money.

Exactly, the government is there it create the framework for successful people to thrive.

People who work in government now do so because they are not suited to wealth creation. The public sector goes from able administrators at the top of government to the willing unemployable at local authority level.

The key is not to minimise government.

In fairness to Rachel Maclean, she has had a decent experience in hte private sector with HSBC and then created her own business. she's not one of those career politicians who have done nowt.

His brother was in Big Audio Dynamite which has to be a good thing.
As a session guy on a few gigs. BAD belonged to Mick Jones who was fired from the Clash. Englandshire was full of these minor bands that came suddenly and went even quicker - heroin, alcohol and rank stupidity usually filleted their ranks.

These creatures then spend the rest of their lives annoying people by trying to cadge favours from studio owners, record companies and anyone with a set of drums to resurrect a career that never was.
