Buying barcodes

Hi all.

I have invented a product and I am doing ok with it online and I would like to wholesale it to petrol stations/shops etc...

What is the process with barcodes so they can scan it?

Do I have to provide it or do they?

I have been looking at GS1 and I found one site for £1 per barcode which is not economical for me.

Can anybody Reccomend the cheapest solution, its only one single product.

£1 is good value unless you are buying super high volumes.

As for cheaper, depends on what you need it for. Barcodes are just numbers that meet an pattern, so you can make them up.

How many barcodes do you need for this one product? If you make up your own barcode you may find that some companies refuse to accept it if the barcode you have used is already registered to another company/product.

Well to start of I would like to try 50 for 50 items (all the same)

Would I really have to pat £50 for that?

Why would you need 50 separate barcodes for 50 identical products? That would be 50 separate products to be loaded into each retailer's till system. Surely you would only need a single barcode which is then used on each identical item.

All Barcodes have to be purchased through GS1. You also have to pay a yearly fee for as long as the barcode is in operation.

If £50 is too much for you the item can't be very profitable.

My profit margin is £1 per item sold, if I had to pay £1 per barcode I wouldn't make any money.

I'm trying to work out if I have to pay £1 per barcode, or is it £1 for the EAN of the barcode, and I pay say 5p for the cost of the ink and barcode label?

I think you’ve completely misunderstood here. You buy one barcode for one item. As long as every single item is the same, it’s the same barcode. You sell one of them or a million….same barcode!

Integrate it into your artwork, print it on whatever package you have, and away you go.
