Buying a domain name

There is a .com domain name which I would like to acquire.

It is for sale; there is a link at the bottom of the page saying "If you want to buy this make us an offer" and a pop up opens up where you can fill in your details and propose a sum.

The page is currently used for advertising and I shouldn't think it gets that many visitors but who knows? As far as I know this domain name has been for sale for at least 4 years.

What is the best way of going about this?

I have no idea what sort of offer to make. What sort of prices do domain names go for, tens, hundreds or thousands of pounds?

Presumably I should make my offer anonymously so they can't see the value of the name to me personally but would this backfire at the point of sale?

Does anyone offer a broking service for this sort of thing?

Hi Deniser

Umh .............domains are interesting. You can always go in with £10 and see what response you get!! I have done this before and got a yes.

Is there a specific reason you want that domain ie part of your brand?

The other option is you want search engine visibility is to go for a domain name with one of your keywords in it.

I would start pretty low as some domains depending on length and keyword density/popularity can go for millions let alone tens of thousands. But if its not such an indemand domain and someone is just sitting on it, go for £10 you never know.

Sedo is the best brokering service for domain names.

If it's a decent keyword domain I would start higher than £10 as you are unlikely to get a response.

Take a look at what domains are actually selling for on Sedo (not what people are asking), which should give you an idea of its worth and then base your offer on that.

Ultimately as with anything, it is worth what the highest bidder is willing to pay for it.

Many sites share what their current traffic is, the age of the domain etc as these are all elements that will impact its value. Keyword density, how marketable it is etc are also critical if a little more subjective.

I have bought domains for £X0 and have sold/ leased domains for £X0,000 but there are many paying a lot more than this.
