Hello All

I was wondering if I could have any advice on buying a running care home. We have the funds to buy a care home and are hoping to buy an already managed one but we would like to be involved in the running of the business.

I was wondering how difficult is it to go into, if there are things we need to look at before buying one and any other info that you can give me.

Many Thanks :)

From someone whose mother is in one,

Be prepared to go the extra mile.

Invest in and support your staff, there are some wonderful people who are loving and caring and many are stressed by the management! Stressed carers cannot care as well for others.

Get on top of systems to manage paperwork efficiently and discretely. Your concern is the people. You need to evidence and log issues but be creative in the way you log.

Study nutrition. (I am appalled at the rubbish being served)

Don't do it unless you like people and really care. Take time to understand what the residents lives were like before and don't assume they don't understand just because it takes a long time for them to translate thoughts into words. They can be very perceptive especially to emotions.

Be open and clear with relatives, they too are suffering.

It is a caring business.

Also old people want a lot more these days than being plonked in a chair smelling of urine in front of a TV , they expect up to date services as they are paying top rates

Regulations are constantly changing for the better of the customer but normally to the extra cost of the owner

I would guess that in the next ten years only new purpose built facilities will be acceptable matching hotel like rooms, but that's just my guess

I just hope that you have done your research well and have good experience with care homes. Lot of politics involved especially now that social services budget is spread to the max.

Learn to balance staff and patient needs otherwise you will either be on a loss (with too much staff) or in trouble ( if too many residents with less staff).

Make sure that you have extra funds available as most home requires renovation.

This is a very high risk business and I hope you do well.
