Business rates question

I have a retail business which occupies a building. I've never paid rates (never been asked and certainly never offered). Now the grants are being assessed through the rates system.
So, should I point out to the rates people that I should be paying rates, in the hope that I may get the appropriate grant?

Do you need 10k that much to risk a backdated rate demand?

Would backdated business rates plus whatever penalties plus whatever rates for next 12 months (if yours is payable) be worth the possibility of a grant?

It's a big place so would be in the 25k bracket. And I suppose they'd find out one day anyway, so now seems a better time to let them know I suppose?

You've never paid rates but you're in the £25k bracket? They will backdate it, so you'll find yourself with a hefty bill. Definitely worth working out how much your rates will have been over the years so you can see what sort of bill you'd get - you can look at at similar properties on the VOA website.
