I work in (probably) the biggest company in the US right now which uses a huge & costly BI environment for all aspects of operational & financial reporting.
Because it's soo costly to build anything on these platforms we have neen using QlikView to build prototypes for:
inventory reporting
KPIs / dashboards on any business metrics you want
Analysis of shop floor data
etc
We've used QV because it's cheap compared to other platforms (we have an enterprise set up but it's free for personal use!). So has been quick and very cost effective for us compared to trying to do the same through BO/teradata.
It was in Time Magazine today (time.com) search for QlikView
I have to say though no point in implementing a BI system for something you can answer in Excel...
What are you trying to fix / get answer to? Or is someone trying to sell you a system?!
Yes, you can benefit from a business intelligence system a lot. But is important to find the appropriate software. For example, it is important if a BI solution is built for a specific industry like banking, health or insurance just to mention a few. Once you know which are the business intelligence companies that fit your business, it will be easier to search for the adequate software.
