Hello to everyone at UKBF! Thought it was about time that I introduced myself.

I’m in the process of setting up a business development consultancy based in Manchester.

The service that I offer my clients is flexible and multi-faceted with the primary function being to generate new customers and open up new revenue streams and markets. This can incorporate any and all aspects of the sales process, including strategy and planning, lead generation and appointment setting, face to face and telephone-based sales, support on the exhibition stand or in the boardroom, and fundamentally, bringing in new accounts and closing deals.

This is not telemarketing. This is professional business development - Clients only pay for the business that I generate: No upfront costs and no excuses.

I have many years experience spearheading sales and business growth spanning a broad range of industry sectors, both in the UK and internationally. So, whether you're an established company looking to consolidate and grow, or a fledgling start-up trying to get off the ground, I would be delighted to hear from you.

I appreciate you taking the time to read this post and welcome any questions or feedback.

Best regards to all,

John Niven.

P.S. here’s a freebie some of you might find useful:

If you’re not having much luck getting through to a key decision maker, try calling your target before 9am or after 6pm. Company directors are often the first to arrive and the last to leave the office each day and will invariably pick up the phone if no one else is there, plus, they will be more inclined to speak (and listen) to you if they're not snowed under with meetings and the distractions of a busy office. Give it a try!;)

Hi John

I would like to wish you the best of luck with your new venture.

As a marketer myself I am very busy at the moment as are many others on UKBF offering similar services. I would therefore caution against doing all work on risk / reward basis where you take all the risk. You must be aware that in spite of sound marketing strategies and your own endeavours some clients will inevitably drag their feet or fail to provide the prerequisite resources. Campaigns can fail for reasons beyond your control.

Having said that a combination of sensible up front fees and a hefty win bonus is a great way to motivate both you and the client.

Regards

Mike

Evening chaps.

As you can appreciate, I didn’t include a huge amount of detail in my first post for fear of producing something bordering on War and Peace.

So down to business:

When I say that my clients “only pay for the business that I generate” I mean that my fee structure, for the vast majority of the work that I do, is purely commission-based, taking a percentage of the sales and accounts that I bring in for the client. I do some consultancy work on fixed rate terms but that’s it.

There is no set-up or ongoing admin fee, hourly or daily rate or cost per completed call. Why and how can I do this? Because I’m selective about who I work with, and I’m good at what I do. Not every company is well suited to my service and I never make promises I can’t keep – but if I am working with you, chances are we’ll both do very well.

What’s my experience? What do I specialise in?

As I always say - fundamentally, selling is selling - the inherent rules, skills and techniques are always the same and transcend all markets. Obviously one has to learn their product inside out, and there exist subtle nuances between sectors, but these are no obstacle to a fully briefed and prepared professional.

I have substantial experience in a range of sectors including Recruitment, Healthcare, Media and Pharmaceuticals, operating in the UK and internationally.

Current clients include a full-service marketing agency, a video production company and a software development company.

Ultimately, as long as the product or service is sound, with viable margins and turnaround times, I’ve got no qualms about attacking new markets.

Thanks for all your comments and I look forward to your feedback. J

Say I had a website that was on the front page of Google for e.g. "physiotherapists" and got a few hundred unique visitors per day, would you be able/willing to sell advert placements or directory listings there?

Also, what is your typical commission percentage?

Finally, how quickly do you begin bringing in the sales?

Our customer services consultancy works on a strict system. The customer pays half up front, and they don't pay the remaining balance if their customer service has not improved in the agreed time frame.

It makes sure we get quality clients, and they are confident we will do a good job, as we have bet money on it ;)
