    Hello DariusCool,

A business coach can be a mentor who will have had senior/specific industry roles relevant to your role/industry OR a business coach can be a business generalist. In my case, I was a Finance Director with a marketing MBA so I had coaching roles as a generalist (business planning, setting missions and goals etc, managing people) or I have been a mentor (guiding a MD through specific business growth and contracts).

Ultimately a coach helps you observe, act and take new responsibility and become redundant when the skills are embedded.

I'm not the biggest fan of business coaches. It's far too easy for anyone to set themselves up as a business coach for a few quid to buy a user manual from a franchise, then go out charging thousands a month to people who believe they're bringing in experts to help solve their business woes.

Question for you, do you want a mentor to show you the benefit of their experience in a similar industry to you, or do you want a coach to be a sounding board for you to find your way to solving your business challenges yourself?

What about bringing in and employing a Non-Exec Director in your businesses? They often act as a combination of both coach and mentor.

Either way, whoever you work with ask the challenging questions - why are they the best qualified to help you. What experience do they have, and can they provide evidence/references for that experience.

Can do it yourself. Would recommend Jim Rohn books for that.
Ultimately goals are often distant ones and the trick is navigating the journey.
I would be wary of trying to make goals fit into SMART requirements, though of course the key points in the journey could be made to fit.
SMART is somewhat limiting on goals at times.
Out of 10 goals I can use SMART on just one, the quickest one.

I'd be inclined to disagree with the above

Whilst the industry is riddled with chances, incompetents and charlatans the fact that you have identified a specific need suggests that you are extremely likely to benefit from a mentor and puts you in a good position to filter who is suitable for your needs

My suggestion would be to steer clear of schemes and franchises but seek out an individual who can demonstrate results in a similar environment and who you can relate to

One piece of advice that applies to almost any service is to pay close attention to how challenging and focused their questions are, whilst ignoring silly claims and promises

Now for the challenge of sorting the wheat from the chaff!

I think the golden question here is why?

Often describing the problem you're trying to solve for is better than asking in terms of a solution.

So for example, maybe you're trying to solve having too many things to do at a time, so you struggle to focus on the important things... The solution could be something outside of defining well structured goals.

Or another example could be that you're struggling to quantify achievable goals, and you need help building a business case that's feasible and then putting timelines and milestones down.

So basically, what is the problem you're having and what is the result or outcome you'd like to see from someone helping you with this?

    There is the problem

If you need help then you dont know what you are doing . If you dont know what you are doing then you will make a poor choice
You will end up with a comedian that is of little use and it will be a while before you realize it

    Hi Darius,
I know this is a `business site`, however, it sounds as if there is a cross-over with your career and personal life and you are looking for guidance on both counts, life coaching and mentor to discuss all aspects of your life in whatever form they may take, both in the past, now and in the future.

I suggest you find someone to discuss your initial ideas and thoughts moving forward on what expectations you may have.

    Hope this helps.
