Hi newbie here,

Hoping some of you may be able to help with a query I have regarding my business address.

I'm in the process of building a website for a new company within the engineering sector.

The company registered address is my home address but I really don't want to put that on the website. The business will be marketed to medium sized companies therefore I think having my home address on the website is unprofessional and not too sure about having a PO Box address either.

Can anyone please tell me what other options I have in terms of registering my business to another address?

Many thanks

A virtual office may be the best option if you wish to keep your personal address hidden, a lot of services also offer mail forwarding so any post you do receive will be sent onto your own address, either next day or even digitally depending on the company.

The downside is that a quick google search of said address would result in the company's name you would be using as a service unless it's less known, the other option is to rent a small office space if this is within your budget and use this as your means of business and expand when you see fit!

Thanks for your replies - its been really helpful!

If I were to use a virtual office, could I also register this address with Companies House and HMRC? Is there any recommended websites to 'rent' a virtual office?

Is there any legal requirement to put the company address on a website?

Hi there.

I represent a company formation agent, and we'll definitely be able to help you with this.

We provide a registered office service or 'virtual office service' whereby you can use our Nottingham office address, and we can then forward on your business mail to your preferred trading or residential address. This is for private limited companies based within the UK.

I would be happy to talk with you in further detail if you'd like on - 0115 721 0957.

Best,
Chris

Banks will post letters to virtual offices. We get them all the time. Beware: sometimes they, and/or some banks, will post letters to the registered office of the company. That may be a back-check on making sure the it's a legitimate request.

Before I came to work where I am now, Santander were happy to post my limited company's bank letters to my home address.

If banks require proof of access to an address, you could show them any substantial letter routed through the address; you don't necessarily need a special 'permission' letter from the virtual office provider.

So, it depends on what the particular bank demands. Just ask them upfront. Saves time!

I sometimes will do a check on prospective clients before taking on a project. I would have absolutely no problem with a home address, while on the other hand I would have a problem with virtual address or say the address of their accountant or solicitor. I must admit that I have only been offered work from one client who did not provide a home address or bricks and mortar business address. I turned the work down - glad I did though as it turned out.

Business is all about trust in my view, and you drive a coach an horses through that right from the beginning by not having an address which is bricks and mortar directly connected to you personally or your business.

Hi Chris, do you provide any proof of address for banks when they want to add it as trading address to their business account?
Thank you.
Hi, sorry for the late reply.

The protocol for this is once a company has been successfully formed through our service, we forward on details to the users preferred bank. The user will refer to the certificate of incorporation and share certificates (which will provide) as the documentation to arrange setting up the business account. The bank will refer to the registered address providing on the documentation.

I hope that helps,
Chris

On the point of using the address as a registered office, you need to be careful and not presume, some virtual offices charge a significant amount extra for this. It may also be a good idea to get a VO where you can lock in a price for 3 years....I would not recommend MailBox etc whose offices can be found on the high streets
