Broadband issues

We have have problems with broadband recently, our ISP agrees that we aren't getting a good service. ( slow speed and dropped connections) We have recently been upgraded to 21CN the ISP now suggests a new router would help.

They are providing the new router, but my question is why would a 3 yr old Netgear DGN2000 be causing the problem ( running the most recent firmware)?

Is it wired or wireless you have the drop outs with? You could try changing the wireless channel via the router admin. This might be set to AUTO at present so change the g/b/n channel via router admin and the wireless client. I have a Netgear DGND3300 N300 and had this problem so changed the channel until the problem stopped. There is an app you can get that will test the frequency (I forget the name) and this would allow you to check the difference with each channel change.

Well, the new router arrived and the speed is now worse! Varies from 1.2 Mbps to 0.2 to 0 in the space of 20 mins! I will leave it on test for a few days and then report back to my ISP.

All tests are wireless, this is my home connection so mostly use iPad.

ISP told me not to change anything on the router as it is preconfigured to work optimally. ( assuming optimally is a word)

However I can try this when I revert to my netgear!

I have improved wireless connectivelty by changing the channel, thanks for the info.
