i am doing a small construction project ( 14 flats ) for a company i have not worked for before. Everything to start with was going ok, but they have always been hopeless at getting information, materials to site when they are needed. As a result of this we have a number of items part finished, and have been told to start other jobs that aren't really to be carried out, which i can see will cause problems in the future.
the contracts manager has been on site today and i received a shitty email about needing more labour on site and if it dosent happen they will bring in other chippies and take work off me.
can anybody help me with a constructive reply as I'm that pissed off with them at the mo i can only think of four letter responses.

OK, this isn't exactly how you should word it, but I'd go along the lines of...
Good Afternoon [insert name here]
In order to comply with basic Health & safety and BS standards it would be unwise for us to start on another section of the work required until we have completed what we need to do.
The last thing I am sure you would want to happen is to be faced with filling out forms for RIDDOR because work wasn't completed to satisfactory standard before we continued with the project and an accident was to occure.
I have attached our standard H&S documentation regarding what you are asking us to do while on site, and you will see that it would be uncompliable for me and my staff (if you have some... not sure
) to continue with the project until:
A. [insert section of work that is required here]
is completed by the installation of [insert materials here]
B. [insert section of work that is required here]
is completed by the installation of [insert materials here]
I am sure that a professional company like yourselves understands that we can only comply to the basic requirements of this installation, by failing to do so would mean that you have requested us to go against our standard of practice, therefore if anything untoward was to happen you as the Projects Manager would be liable.

Play it into his hands so that he/she is aware that if you cut corners, it is them that would be liable as you are the sub-contractor on the job and you are following thier requirements of installation... If anything, it may ease them off from the pushing, and make them sort out the materials you need so as not to hold the job up longer...
Quite obviously, there are people here that would be able to help a lot more than I could ever with in this situation, however as a Manager I do know that if I was to ask my staff including sub-contractors to work outside the basic H&S laws, it would be me personally that would be liable.
