Hi, we are usually found in the middle of page one in google for 90% of search terms related to our business. But business is very slow due to small amounts of website traffic.

We link exchange on a weekly basis, but is it better to blog and write articles, to increase website traffic and overall google positioning.

Blogs and articles are all new to me, I've tried to add the software required on my domain (wordpress installed), but i dont know were to start, So any advice?

Hi,

Just a thought - you say that you're listed on page 1 of Google for 90% of relevant search terms, but the number of website visitors is still low. As a starting point, I think I'd be looking at that.

Are you receiving few visitors because:

1. There simply aren't many people looking for your services online.
2. You've targeted the wrong keywords/phrases?
3. You are listed on page 1 for keywords that are getting viewed by plenty of people, but too few of them are clicking on your site's listing?

I don't know the answer, but I'd use the above as a starting point. Otherwise, you can blog away, write articles and concentrate on the same target keywords, but you may find that you don't get any great increase in visitors (or leads) as a result.

Hi Chris,

If you write good content on your site - then write articles around it.

So for example:

You have a page about 'domestic cleaning leeds' on your website.

If you go to a couple of article websites (like squidoo, ezine, buzzle) and write an article on each about 'domestic cleaning in leeds' - then link them to each other (daisy chaining) and point them to your page on 'domestic cleaning leeds' - you should see some progress.

Have you done much article marketing before?

searchsouth - Yes i think the problem is, we are been viewed on page one but no been clicked on. If I search for a business, i usally would only contact the top 5 listings. We are about 9th on page one.

Thanks for the advice, but no never done article marketing before. I do all the work for the website myself and its just learning these new methods i suppose, to help boost my website traffic.

Hi Chris,

Article marketing is not particularly hard or complicated - just time consuming.

There are a few articles on our site that may help, but the main thing to do is to write unique content.

Hope the articles are helpful.

Chris,

Ah - I see what you're saying. You have page one positioning, but you're not particularly prominent on page one.

Ok, in that case it does sound like you'd benefit from the addition of content and link building.

Broadly, I would suggest that you can write content for 2 purposes.

1. You can write for your own site. Ideally, I would think that this should involve high quality content that your customers will be interested in. You could include links to other sections of your site too (in fact - I would suggest that you do).

2. You can write content to be used on other websites. This content would be provided in exchange for links back to your own site. You might approach blog owners (in your niche) with such content, or maybe post on article distribution websites (as mentioned above).

A combination of the two should pay dividends. Don't forget to think about your use of anchor text too.

Hope that helps!

I don't know I would be a little careful about creating link wheels to pass link juice to the target website you want to increase in the SE's.

If you did do that you would need unique content for each one and you would need about 400-500 words on each.

I personally would rather take those 3 articles and use them for guest blogging.

You need to get into the top 4 positions to see any real traffic.

I don't think a basic package will help (no offence) because it sounds like your up against other websites, which are also after those terms, maybe your main competitors and directory and article submissions wont cut it (after the panda update that is) IF thats what the basic package involves (Sorry if its not this, but usually from my experience it is).

Your best off taking that couple 100 quid it might cost for the basic package and spending it on a copy writer making you 15-20 quality articles putting 5 of them on your website blog (1 a week with a anchor text link back to your pages) and submitting the others for guest blogging.

This is your problem,

The keywords your aiming for don't generate any traffic.

Your title tag has Cleaners Leeds, Office Cleaners In Leeds and Leeds Domestic Cleaners

1. Cleaners Leeds (320 searches a month)
2. Office Cleaners In Leeds (28 searches a month)
3. Leeds Domestic Cleaners (less then 10 searches a month)

How about these:

1. Cleaners Leeds (320 searches a month)
2. Office Cleaning Leeds (320 searches a month)
3. Cleaning Services Leeds (210 searches a month)

And target all your efforts at getting these to rank higher. Get them up into the top 5 results and your see more traffic and in turn hopefully more business.

hope this helps

Some real good advice here, I would like to thank you all for your help. The main reason I wont use SEO companies, is i've heard alot of negative things about them.

Regarding the site looking spammy... we are still working on the site content and update the site daily.

I've also heard alot about guest blogging, but what is it?

For (open sesame) so you think my keywords are wrong for the index page? how did you get that traffic information.

Keep up the good work :)

Guest blogging is basically where you write an article then give it to a blog or website so they can use it for its content.

Because you have given them this article they give you back a anchor text link, which helps your serp's (search engine ranking positions).

Now imagine if you did this for 5-6 quality websites, your have 6 anchor text links from authoritative websites along with the added benefit of the exposure of website to there visitors.

Regarding traffic this is Google's official keyword tool, set the match type to exact and search for different terms to see the 'local monthly search volumes' basically how many times the search is performed in the UK.

Here is the link - adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal

Don't look at the competition stats (This is for Adwords advertisers, this gives them a rough guide to how much the keyword would cost if they was to bid on it, this type of marketing is called PPC (Pay Per Click).

All you want to do is set to exact match and look at the traffic volume for local.

You can check something called 'Google Insights', which will show you the trend of the traffic over a period of time.

So if you did all of 2010 and you was looking at the keyword Christmas gifts, you would see a graph which showed low search from Jan all the way through to Oct then all of a sudden a massive spike.

Your keywords should really be a flat line, maybe it would drop a little over Christmas as companies close for the Christmas period and therefore don't need a cleaner.

I'm telling you this because the figures in the Google keyword tool are an average over 12 months.

So if from Jan to Nov a keyword got 0 search and in Dec it got 12,000 the keyword tool would show local monthly searches 1,000.

That's why its good to check the Google Insights tool to make sure the traffic is evenly spread throughout the year.

I'm 99% sure your keyword will be spread.

---

finejewellerys, the keywords I suggested are the top traffic drivers, you wont be able to find anything else with more search unless you go more broad as in taking out Leeds.

I know what you are saying about basic packages (a lot are pretty awful) however the guy i had in mind really does a good job.

Anyway lots of good advice in this thread!

I would look at the keywords you are using and do some intense keyword research. What are your potenial customers searching for when they look for simular products. What keywords are being optimised by your successful competitors. Is the copy you use to direct users to your website effective? Do you have call to actions and offers to encourage click through? Maybe look at promotions to increase traffic.
