do you get any link juice from them or is it just a way to get traffic to your site?

Both... if you create a great piece of content you can receive a lot of traffic and link juice through other websites and bloggers linking to the content.

One of the best blogs around for learning more about social bookmarking websites is doshdosh.com

Top left is the hot spot on a page, but if you can get the button nice and descreet at the top of the page, and a more obvious one at the end of the article/content you should get more clicks. Remember, this is getting your users to do some of your link building for you, its worth maximising the CTR of the buttons.

ummmm..... you just go around bookmaring your own stuff as much as you possibly can. Don't wait for someone to Stumble or Digg you - just go do it yourself.. that's what everyone else does (well that's the impression I get) :p

That's what most people do but it's definitely not the right approach. It could even severely hurt your website.

If you want to market your website using social media, you first have to get into the social media mindset. I.e. Why is everyone else using these websites?

The answer: To share great content with other like-minded people.

First, get familiar with what they want. Second, create that content with your business focus in mind. Third, work out how these people will see this content.

After all, someone won't digg your content unless they're already a digg user. So think about how you can get the right people's attention.

Also, don't try to promote all your stuff. Only try to promote your really good stuff. I did one at the end of January (which actually spread to this forum organically) and am about to do another next week. The shotgun approach is definitely not the way to win unless you already have a tonne of visitors.
