Blog review please

Hi! I am assuming you all called Nina :)

Such a great start, because it is informative. However I think you should start to gear this more around search engines. What you do need to start thinking about is answering questions.

So take the first post "Alabama Rot – What All Dog Owners Should Know" and compare it to the third post "Paw prints in the butter". The first post is great, it is around a subject that people would more than likely type in on the internet. The third post could be honed around a search term a bit more. Try expanding on it a bit, to a term that might be searched or asked like "Does rubbing a cat's paw prints in butter help?".

I would revisit some of your posts, and see what question you are actually trying to answer. Then title them, and use your new key term through out the text where you can.

Don't mess around with the slugs at this stage unless you know what you are doing, or have a redirect plugin. This can really damage the rank you've already gained.

"The best that you can be" post text, I think should go on your about page. It is a fantastic background story about how you started your business. Google loves clarity. Humans love a background story that captures the heart.

You got two ADVICE category buttons on the left hand side.

Your FAVICON should reflect your logo.

On the design side, there may be a few things but it is a good start. Have just run out of time, will post on the design later :)

Thanks Kelly, your advice is invaluable, although I have no idea what a FAVICON is!

I am going to take a look back at some of my posts and adjust them according to your advice. Thank you.

No problem!

The Favicon is the little logo you see on the browser tab, right at the top. Yours is the head of a cartoon dog, I think :) You should be able to change that in your theme settings.

On the design side, it could be more modern and more refined, however it is simple to use so that is a great start.

The social media icons are fuzzy on the edges, that is a annoying me as a designer.

The moving images (when you scroll down) on the home page are stretched rather than cropped.

Good luck with it all Nina! K

  • Your blog needs more photos - make them stretch to full width
  • Internal linking absent - the main purpose of a blog to support the landing pages which is missing here
  • Make the sub-headlines more visible - use bigger fonts and colours
  • If possible, write the meta description for each post

Some great points from previous members.

I'd only add a few things at this point:
- Use video, images and other asset forms on key pages
- On blogging topics, avoid politics and generally divisive themes
- As previously mentioned, Articles is featured twice in the sidebar
- Think about changing the sidebar to be specific to each page (only include relevant links that will benefit the user) and not the repetition of locations. Search engines look down on repetitive, or 'duplicate' content.
- Think about blogging with other members of your industry, especially sitters who have personal blogs and are open to contributions. Make sure you include 1 or 2 links in your contributions that go back to your own site.
