Biased BBC

All the BBC did in that report, was to report on what Junker said. There was no editorialising in the body of the report - and TM got a video at the top without any additional commentary.

In the editorial below the article was the usual trotting out of journalistic platitudes and interviews with the 'Common Man' (aka The Man on the Street!) though this time it was a collection of irrelevant people claiming to be worried!

Trust me - I have close links with all kinds of rest-27 EU citizens and Brits abroad and they don't look or sound very worried to me!

Amused at TM's and Davis' incompetence, yes.

But worried? No!

I think it is called lazy journalism to bulk out news programmes with interviews with the "common man".

Often the people interviewed in these street interviews make false statements which are not challenged by the reporter. These reports if they have misleading information in them should have a disclaimer in them in my view or just not shown.

They are rarely from a cross section of the population. They are mostly taken in streets and shopping malls during journalists' office hours when most people are also at work, so the opinions are usually biased towards those of the unemployed and retired.

PS. Though, I thought the interview with Brenda of Bristol was pure gold.

I did hear once that many years ago we had something called journalists. They could even write about what they were reporting on.
It appears in recent years we get more 'press release' news.
How would you prefer to see this particular event covered by the BBC? Basic coverage of a basic event (so far) doesn't seem to cut it for you, so what would you like to see?

Lazy journalism would simply be posting the video with a headline. Less lazy still is to offer the video with excerpts and related details to provide background to the event. Throwing in the vox-pops (which are often taken at lunchtimes when there's a fair mix of people about) is related news and provides context, but it's almost like merging two separate news stories into one. It's not lazy so much as unfocused.

As for leaving people to speak unchallenged, aside from the fact that's the point of vox-pops (it's informative to know how much of the general population is uninformed), the media in general do not seem to be in the habit of fact-checking their interviewees and never was this more apparent than during the referendum campaign with the outright deceptions and outrageous lies spouted by the Leave campaigns - £350m indeed, sheesh.

This piece was by no means 'journalistically tight', but it's a huge overreaction to label it 'screaming liberalism' as in the OP.

My comment was more in response to the headline and how selective facts are being framed in the article. As Robinson said about Radio 4 editing, there is no need to pretend to be balanced anymore. He is a remainer and will load bias at every opportunity.

The last thing anyone should want is an echo chamber for our own personal views, that's why we keep butting heads on this forum, but for a service I'm legally obliged to pay for has a duty to be balanced.

The bit I picked up on was Dear Laura from the BBC kindly pointing out that May's proposal would upset those who voted for Brexit would be really upset that those people who have made their homes and lives here for more than 5 years will have their rights protected. But the BBC did not challenge May on her statement that all people from the EU who live here would be protected, which is blatantly not true for those who moved here 4 years and 364 days ago. Yes the BBC is biased.

Why would they be upset? I don't recall any proposal to deport EU citizens on Brexit.

I think it has been generally accepted that those here could stay, and subject to controls decided by our govt, more could come.

You have selectively quoted my post. Laura Kuenssberg (I may have missplet her surname) stated that May's proposal (limited as it is) pointed out that "those who voted for Brexit would be really upset that those people who have made their homes and lives here for more than 5 years will have their rights protected."

Baroness Laura von Künßberg, daughter of Professor Dr. Baron Ekkehard von Künßberg and granddaughter of Professor Dr. Baron Eberhard von Künßberg and biologist Dr. Baroness Katharina von Künßberg.

Ekkehard v. Künßberg was a war hero in the resistance and during his medical studies in Innsbruck, he helped Jews escape over the mountains into Switzerland. In 1933, things got too hot for the family and they fled to Britain. He was a founder and president of the Royal College of GPs and one of those who discovered the effects of Thalidomide.

    Damn these unskilled immigrants!

So where did she get her right wing bias from? Oh, hang on ...

Actually, you missed a generation. Apparently her father is Nick K...g, her grandfather was the said Ekkehard.

What right wing bias? She is far more balanced than her predecessor.

What a terrifying thought that is. At least Nick Robinson was never censured.

In January 2017 the BBC Trust ruled that a report in November 2015 by Kuenssberg broke the broadcaster’s impartiality and accuracy guidelines. A viewer had complained about her item, which featured an interview with Jeremy Corbyn on the BBC News at Six which was edited to give the incorrect impression that Corbyn disagreed with the use of firearms by police in incidents such as that month's terrorist attacks in Paris.

I have come to the conclusion some people don't even have a voice So why would I mock the BBC

I remember a *lot* of people worrying that could be a possibility within the Remain camp and a *lot* of people hoping that would be a possibility within the Leave camp.

The rise in hate crimes and similar xenophobic incidents are testament to this. The plausible deniability of "well nobody from an official Leave campaign said that," doesn't really carry any weight given that three-quarters of what they did say was straight up false.

In fairness, it's not like anyone picked up on it or like it became the right-wing's received wisdom about him, and I've never heard anyone using it to justify calling him names.

So, you know, no harm done, etc.

The Right is completely convinced that the BBC is controlled by a left wing liberal, pro-Corbyn elite.

The Left knows as an absolute certainty that the BBC is enthralled by May and Farrage and only seeks to report on affairs in the interests of the establishment.

Remainers complain bitterly about the pro-Brexit bias of the BBC and the amount of coverage that UKIP received in the past.

Brexiteers call the BBC the Brussels Broadcasting Corporation.

Unless of course you are one of the many members of Muslim groups or a member of the EDL, in which case, you will have been calling the BBC the Bethlehem Broadcasting Conspiracy.

Generally, I think mainstream media are bias in their own ways.
All media contains bias, even if much of it is unintentional.

Our task, as individual citizens, is to critically assess the information from the sources and, where not reading specific factual data, we must adjust for bias ourselves.

A person being angry about news outlets having bias is a person that doesn't actually like thinking. The problem we've seen is news outlets' bias being lumped in with the outright lies by the likes of Fox and The DM; all bias is thus seen (rather childishly) as the very worst of sins.
