Hi, new to this so go easy on me :)

Can anyone recommend a company for accepting telephone payments?

My business only takes a handful of payments per month but the individual payments could be anywhere from £300 upto £35,000.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I would certainly not recommend Sum Up for these high value transactions as the processing fees are way too high. You want to achieve a rate less than 1% ideally.

Typically taking payments over the phone can be classed as 'High Risk' by the card processors. Any particular reason for talking payments over the phone?

That’s just the deposit, our actual costs are way higher.

We don’t lift a finger without a deposit. Our initial costs for materials are very high.

Yeah I can imagine they are, especially if you're gonna go around pimping up Lambo's, very nice job by the way.

I would suggest PayPal or Stripe but using their invoicing feature, where the customer gets the invoice and they make the payment themselves without giving you the number over the phone. Taking payments over the phone probably isn't the best way to stay PCI compliant.

You can also take one-off deposit payments using GoCardless, where the max you will be charged is £2, regardless of the amount, which will save you £££ compared to the others; https://gocardless.com/pricing/

With such a high individual payment value PP, Stripe and GoCardless are unlikely to be a good fit for your business (they won't be comfortable with these values). How are you accepting these payments now? Do you have some payment history?
