Best Internet resource for learning about PR

Hi.

I am starting to do PR for my business for the first time.

I have been reading two books on the topics but they may be a bit outdated.

Is there a good resource on the Internet for DIY PR that you have used and you were happy with?

Thanks

Forget rip-off courses, do it yourself or hire a professional PR agent.

To begin with, suggest you approach local press first, see what you end up with press-wise, this will tell you whether its worth pursuing eg: not every business is lucky or good enough to get media attention.

To be honest, ordinary biz websites arent 'hot webby news', never were, never will be.

You need to keep in the media, to build up a profile - this has great credibility benefits that you cannot simply buy eg: recommendations from Journalists, other big websites picking up the story etc etc.

I think PR is very delicate as if done wrongly it will have completely the opposite effect as the aim.
Hire a pro and learn from them, I don't think anything can replace practical experience on this, I am not one for class learning as all lessons are generic - every case, customer and campaign will require bespoke treatment and execution.

That is a good point...

A typical example of this is something like "super nanny" on tv - deals with every child the same way because this is how college, uni, social study educated her to do it but she does not have her own child so how can she educate, when she does her child will feel no different to everyone that she has worked with in the past but I bet then from a "mom" point of view her methods will not work as theory is a different game to practice.

Sorry completely different concept but it highlights the point I believe.

A long time ago we used an Internet-based service: you posted your business situation online, and for £295 they gave you advice. It worked really well, but I've just tried the site and the domain is for sale. However, there may be other similar sites out there.

Otherwise, we've tried a couple of other agencies (I won't name them) with disappointing results.

My own feeling is that if you want PR done well, you'll either need a HUGE budget or some good ideas to do it yourself. After all, you're the one who understands your business, your customers and who has most interest in its success.
