best free backlink checker?

I know its been done loads but after a good backlink checker that shows just the linking domain. dont like the site explorer 1 as it shows up to many deep links

Linkdiagnosis is good you need to use it on firefox though, but either way these tools dont show all links they just give you a good idea of what is going on.

no free tool gives you the full picture of the backlinks footprint - you'll be limited in the total number of backlinks (generally 1000 for SS scrapers) or forced to run the list through different services to determine follow/nofollow, links on page, page and domain PR, Alexa etc.

I would second the idea of using BackLink Watch

the best part is, it will not only give you the backlinks but also tells you whether they are dofollow or nofollow

Unfortunately BLW does not actually crawl the referrer page, hence it cannot tell you if the link is still there or how many links are on that page (internal+external). Useless to rank links or check for paid and reciprocal links, and painful to export to a decent spreadsheet application if you want to analyze the footprint properly.

If it shows loads of deep links then it's often a good sign.
