Bespoke Or Email Marketing Tools

I have a client that wants to start "Email Marketing". Yes they have just arose from the dead. On a more serious note i can develop a system for them for around 5k which would be a mini tracking tool and crm package, but my question is... would this be wise or should i take them towards an out of the box alternative. If you prefer out of the box could you let me know what you think is best. Thanks JG

It'd be best for you (in the short term) if you developed something. I guess it would be better for your client (and you in the long term) if you showed them how they could save the £5k and pointed them towards one of the many email marketing tools out there.

• SugarCRM (free) has email campaign management and it's obviously a crm package too.
• Aweber ($20/month) offer a cheap monthly service but require double opt in (a good thing) which you won't have if you're putting together a list from their contact list.
• Email Marketer (can't remember) offer a hosted and a host it yourself (buy the software) version. They're a list manager but have some interesting ideas on using it as a light CRM package.

I think going for CRM with Integerated Email Marketing will be best option in the long term. Usually we provide our clients a bespoke web based email marketing tool as it is one time investment and dont cost that much.

We use Act! to coordinate sales effort across our distributed team (a bit of a sod to set up and I suspect we are using about 5% of it's capability right now) and ConstantContact for a newsletter to subscribers as well as a sales pipeline system in Excel for managing ongoing conversions..

ConstantContact won us a client after our first newsletter and therefore won our hearts as our eLetter contact tool of choice.

I am more than happy to give advise on the use of these tools or our subsequent pipeline management so that you can also increase your profits - just come and ask me.
