The letters are undisputed personal property and also sensitive as they could be connected with health of the OP.
However, there is no way the police can know for certain what the status of the property is. The OP can show receipts but he is not an employee of this company he is an ex-director of it who is presently in dispute wit them. Even if he could show receipts to say that he bought the computer etc. as a director he could have brought those items into the company. Even if he didn't, the items are still in the possession of the company. There are many items that companies have in their possession which they do not own, such as photocopiers or plant. If they refuse to make payments, the company who owns the equipment has to go through the civil courts to get their equipment.
This is not a case of an ex-employee not getting his hat an coat back from the firm he once worked for. It is a case of a director who has a dispute with the company he has just left. There are many loose ends to be tied up in those situations especially if there is a director who resigns without any prior discussions.
