Hello Everyone ,

I have a client who has been paying over £500 per month for SEO for over a year , I have checked the website and there is no signs of ANY seo , on page or Off page.

The client has written their own content so there and there has been no attempt to support them . But here comes the bad part, they have no contracts and no agreements except information on the SEO the company provides. Is there anyone they can go to report this and have an investigation carried out.

This is appalling behaviour and ruins the name of good SEO Companies.

Any advice most welcome

Regards

I guess if there are no contracts or work schedule then it'll be difficult to prove anything one way or another.

My first port of call would be the SEO company to ask for detail of exactly what has been done and where the money has gone. If this is unsatisfactory - which it certainly sounds like it will be, then I'd be inclined to go to trading standards.

I think most SEO companies worth their salt would give some idea of what could be achieved with timescales, after showing case studies.

No guarantees of course, but £500 a month? That would have to be some pretty decent work, and not casual SEO work, but definitely hands on!!

Have you checked if there are any incoming links to the site using site explorer or similar?

I agree with MattSaw, first step is to ask the SEO company what they have done for the money.

Client pays out £500 a month without question... Can I have his contact details :D

That's no more than 10 hours for a cheapish SEO, 1 hour or less for a top notch SEO. But then I would expect to see some evidence if a top notch SEO was on the case :)

Contracts can be oral and written, and do not have 'CONTRACT' at the top.

Many seo's don't have formal contracts, rather thay have schedules of works agreed from time to time. Due to the nature of the work, an SEO contract is mostly just legal mumbo jumbo. It is the written notification and correspondence thereafter that forms the REAL contract of work.

 An SEO company that takes money for nothing and fails to provide any evidence of work carried out...........never heard of that happening before.......not!!

I'm NOT saying all SEO companies do this.........I know a couple that are very good and would probably be very helpful to companies that know very little about the internet and how things like backlinks, anchor text, etc works but they are rare!!

As a business with a strong online presence we are routinely targeted by so called SEO experts offering to get us to a top ten position on search engines for many of our targeted keywords.......prices we've been quoted range from £300 a month to £900 a month and none of them included any 'onsite' optimisation.

We actually had one guy tell us he could get us to page one on google for HR Services and HR Services Scotland and it would only cost us £700 a month! This guy must have been a real SEO expert................He completely failed to see that we were already ranking on page 1 of google, yahoo and bing for both of these keywords, and others, without ANY help from him or any other SEO 'experts'.

I could easily launch into a rant about SEO and Web Design companies who offer services then fail to deliver after taking payment of substantial amounts of money upfront (I know of many specific examples of this) but I'll resist the temptation and ask these two questions instead..........

1) Can you demonstrate a positive ROI for any investment in SEO? In other words, if you were hitting position one on every search engine there is, would the increase in site traffic result in sales revenues greater than the SEO spend?

If you can then engaging the services of a reputable SEO company is a no brainer.....if you can't, why would you invest £XXX a month when you'll never be able to recover the costs?

2) As a business owner, why agree to pay for SEO services, many of which will have actually already been delivered by a combination of the site owner's own efforts and natural progression via search engines? What is the actual 'value add' the SEO expert is bringing and YOU will be paying for and it the cost justified?

On a more general point, why shouldn't SEO companies carry the burden of the risk themselves and only take full payment when they can demonstrate results have been delivered?

I fully appreciate properly done SEO work, mainly backlink building, takes time and so there is a 'risk' to legitimate SEO companies if they don't take cash up front every month, but surely this risk could be mitigated with robust T&Cs, credit checking potential clients and taking a small (less than £100) retainer each month, only invlicing the final amount once the agreed results are achieved?

And before any SEO companies say they 'can't' do this for a whole host of reasons, let me tell you that many of your competitors have seen the light and ARE doing this or something like it.........like this for example.

/back to the question in the OP/

In this particular case, I would echo what others have already said......insist on a detailed breakdown, including evidence, of the work they claim to have done and when they fail to provide it, immediately challenge them and contact a trading standards AND a good solicitor.

Well if you're already ranking due to your own efforts hiring an SEO consultant is just plain silly...

And some HR companies do not exactly have the best of reputations :D

I haven't looked at the link, but if it's the one I'm thinking of they charge extra for 'taking the risk' and their terms require a solicitor to interpret. Undoiubtably the small print would reduce any 'risk'.

If you pay me enough I will consider 'taking the risk' :D

Well firstly - get the client to stop paying them

Secondly - ask the company for a schedule of what they have done and what work was agreed (that's the only way you are going to know if the SEO has been done).

Without knowing the domain name or site in question no one on this forum can say whether they have been scammed or not.

As with all things check the company out and have at least a basic knowledge of SEO before you get anyone to carry work out on your site.

OWG is right - a contract can be verbal or written and takes many, many forms.

Kind Regards

Emma

Although you haven't mentioned the seo company in question, or the website come to think of it, how do you know there has no work been carried out.
Can you let us look.
I am not saying I dont trust your abilities, but before anything is said lets us have a look see.

If they are a scam company the contact the mirror news paper. they have a couple of guys that expose rouge traders.

If you want to get your own back , Post your reviews on the company. Be friend with them and get as much information about them , website address and any other info. Sorry there is not much you can do really. If he value his business he will give you a refund.

This may help alot of other people from going through the same thing as you

many thanks

That is the problem with you, Marley, instead of running your own business, and trying to create value to the world, you spend your attention and time looking how to slander other companies. Now you are trying to get others to do the same.

There is a way of dealing with such circumstances, which do not include crawling through the business gutter.

Please don't try to encourage other companies to go down the parasitic route you have chosen.
