It now seems likely that there'll be a new Conservative leader in the coming months.

Labour has continually demanded that the PM resigns, in fact we've heard nothing other than that for the whole of this year.

Will a new Conservative leader benefit the Conservative party or the Labour Party?

Labour have nothing else to talk about and you have to ask yourself if Boris was still leader would they have more chance of winning an election or are they just shooting themselves in the foot. In the grand scheme of things at the moment another election is a long way off and will be decided more on what’s happening in the country then rather than now.

What if Boris stood up at PMQs today and said right party I’m calling an election now let the people decide my (and the parties) fate, let’s see how many of you on those back benches get to keep your jobs ……….

The UK markets certainly reacted badly to all the shenanigans yesterday

With 65 million people in the country These are the only clowns that we can come up with !

It just looks like these people are there because nobody else wants to do it .
Why take on that job for 150 k a year when you can be the CEO of a large company for 8 times the salary

I have been saying it might be better to leave Boris there so at the election he takes the wrap for the situation. A new leader can blame him and say all change.

Starmer has either been clever or foolish in stating no return to EU, either way his party is still arguing with themselves as to where they stand generally.

I am hoping for a hung parliament with Libdems holding the key.

Surely the plan here is let Labour in? Let them deal with the next 4 years of a tanking economy and take the power back again when everything has naturally started to get better?
It's a nice idea, but does pre-suppose that there is actually plan, which looks unlikely in the current chaos

If Boris is leader at the next election, I can't see the Conservatives winning. Labour demanding he resign is shooting themselves in the foot (me thinks!)

It'll be fun. Alarm set for 12pm!

Labour are basically being handed the keys to no 10 gift wrapped.
All to no avail, I think!

    They talk . . . . . and talk . . . . .and talk . . . . .and do nothing. Their agenda has been trying to get Boris out for the whole year . . . . . and nothing else.

A country needs a strong political opposition. We have neither.

Everyone will blame him. Not sure any PM would have coped with what has happened over the past 2 years. Lying is his problem, there's only so much the public will take.

He's only just stated it this week! Will Starmer be in charge to fight the next election?

Currently, all the options look pretty bad to me.

He won’t go. He’s like the spoiled kid at school:

‘Come on Boris, you’ve lost the match 5-0 and it’s time to let someone else have a go’

    ‘No, I’ve won’

‘No Boris, you haven’t won, look at the score.’

‘No, I won’t look. You can’t make me.’

‘Boris, we all think it’s time for you to go now please.’

‘No, what I’ve said is that I’ve been very clear about this and I’m staying because I’m the winner.’

Although there is lots of talk of resignations - currently really only the top 2 of this matter in the grand running of govt surely

    From BBC (correct 9.30am)

Let's recap who has resigned from where:

    Cabinet ministers

    • Rishi Sunak - chancellor
    • Sajid Javid - health secretary
    Ministers

    • Will Quince - minister for children and families
    • Alex Chalk - solicitor general
    Ministerial aides

    • Laura Trott - parliamentary private secretary (PPS) to the Transport secretary
    • Jonathan Gullis - PPS to the Northern Ireland secretary
    • Saqib Bhatti - PPS to the Health secretary
    • Nicola Richards - PPS to the Department for Transport
    • Virginia Crosbie - PPS at the Welsh office
    Others

    • Bim Afolami - vice-chair of the Conservative Party
    • Theo Clarke - trade envoy to Kenya
    • Andrew Murrison - trade envoy to Morocco
It's worth remembering that between 160 and 170 MPs currently hold positions from which they'd have to resign in order to oppose the government.

That includes 95 ministers, 47 PPSs, and 20 Conservative trade envoys,

Can anyone explain the phrase 'we have been very clear about this'. It seems to have started with Theresa May and to be intended to mean 'this is true' however, saying a lie clearly does not make it true!

I don't think running of government is what matters. Johnson's cabinet is finally beginning to say that they won't work with a liar. I thought Will Quince's resignation letter particularly useful Effectively 'I have to resign because No 10 told me something was true, so I said publicly that it was true, and it was not true. I have to resign because I lied (even if inadvertently).'

In the first round of the leadership contest, candidates will rely on the support of one or more factions in the Tory party. Factions containing such luminaries as Mark Francois (surely the model for Harry Enfield's 'Tory Boy') and the Johnson brown-noser and mop-wearer Michael Fabricant.

The final round will be decided by 150,000, white, male, middle-aged, middle-class, 'Disgusted of Tonbridge' types - just like me.

    We're doomed.

My point was only 2 of the resignations are cabinet and they are the ones that matter. If the others rally round he can muddle on for a while, if any of the others go then that is what will actually matter (at least until 1922 elections next week)

A hung parliament with the LibDems holding the balance was a nightmare for the LibDems last time.

Yes but I doubt they will go into a coalition with Labour. They would probably do some agreement on individual issues providing Labout support PR.
The biggest third party is likely to be SNP, I would think, and Labour has announced it won't speak to them. Helpful, really!

Probably started around 500BC, but it’s hard to put a date on it. Used by everyone in all walks of life, recently in favour with Politicians.

The job of PM is a poisoned chalice atm, no politician of ANY party really wants it, they all know anyone will get so much blame for what’s coming down the line they stand little chance of achieving anything worthwhile and certainly leave no legacy.

I think Labour stand a better chance with Boris as leader. They've wished for the wrong thing.
But isn't that corrupt thinking? Johnson has to go because he is a liar without the integrity of a gnat. It should not matter whether it is better for Labour if he stays. For Labour to have the integrity missing from Johnson (and the Cabinet) they must demand he go.

I am wondering why, all of a sudden, it is a problem that the PM lies. This has not been a secret, not even before the Tory MPs chose him as their leader. So why, now, get all upset about it? Tories chose him, and supported him. Nothing he has done, nor said, is unpredictable.

    Oh. The polls.

Remember, though. The principles at play in the corridors of power have not, neither will they, change.

Yet there is still a serious chance they won't manage to get in.

    Broadly, this.

Mr Starmer has been staring vacantly at an open goal since the day he took up the job as Leader of the Opposition.

It is far from a certainty that, in the event of a general election, he would be able to muster a viable alternative to reelecting the Tories. And if he did win, I suspect we would scarely notice.

And watch for Starmer's U-turn on the EU in order to get Lib Dem support in a coalition.
    Maybe that is the paln

Make a hoohah now to get votes then able to uturn later saying "part and parcel of the confidence and supply deal we had to do", would suit the libdems as well as they could point to something positive for them from the agreement
