Basics of import-export.

Hi everybody,

I am new to this kind of business and trying to get some profound knowledge.
Currently I am exporting base oil and I need some clarification.

The supplier says that they can send a truck with a product to the port where it will be exported from. But they also need a flexi tank operator information in order to complete a quotation.
At the port a different person will take care of the product and will ship it out of the country to the end user.

Thus, do I need to find a flexi tank operator who will place the product in a flexi tank at the port where it is delivered by the truck?
They also saying that I can pick up the product (EXW) at their location and deliver it to the port.

How do I proceed?
Lastly, how do I return the container after the product was delivered to the end user?

I won't be able to answer your questions, but I am pretty sure that anyone with the knowledge to do so will need to know where the oil is being exported from and where it is being imported to?

Thank you for your response.
It is being exported from one Middle East country and imported to another one. Both of them are close to each other.
Do you think that would be enough or I need to be more specific regarding the countries?

This is generally known in the freight industry as 'Cross Trade' (when a person is arranging export from one country to another and does not reside in the either country). Lots of questions need answering here. What countries are involved, what shipping terms have you agreed with the supplier and/or consignee, how is the product being transported (in bulk tanker or in barrels etc), is product hazardous, who is the shipping agent(s) involved?? If the countries are close to each other and the product is supplied in a bulk tanker, can you drive from one country to the other??? Mike.

Hi Mike,
The oil is exported from Israel and the final destination is West Bank. The supplier can either bring the product to the port in Israel FOB, in a truck or it can be picked up EXW from the supplier. The product is not hazardous, just a kind of lubtication oil. It needs to be transported in a flexi bag placed in a container. Could you clarify about a shipping agent: is it jsut a shipping company that I contact and make arrangements? Also, how is it different from the freight forwarder?

The whole story is that there is supplier, me, another middle man and end user. They want the oil to be shipped from one port in Israel to another one, which is the arrangement that I make. After that, fully prepared to be exported product will be handled by another middle man and it will be sent to the West Bank. Another middle man also wants to keep the end user away from contact with a supplier, such that it's only me and him completing the deal.
How would you perform this shipment?
