Bar-codes on other peoples products

We buy home made candles from a local supplier and they do not have barcodes on them. She is happy for us to list them on Amazon but of course they need a barcode.

Can we generate a barcode for the products ourselves or is it best to ask the supplier to organize this (if she is willing)

Also any recommendations for bar code suppliers? they seem to be from free to £25 each.

Thanks Paul.

Hi Paul,

You can't generate UPC/EAN codes yourself as they have to be guaranteed to be globally unique.

We used barcodestalk.com some time ago, they were cost effective and had no problems on Amazon.

This is the kind of service where personally I'd go with someone that guarantees to provide you with a legitimate product, who isn't free, and I wouldn't go with anyone offering bells and whistles for a premium.

However, if you are buying the candles from someone else I'd see if you can persuade them to sort out the EAN/UPC codes. The article number really needs to be assigned by the maker.

Firstly, I give no guarantee the following is 100% correct but it is 100% my experience!

To buy barcodes which are properly registered is expensive - someone has to maintain a global database and that involves recurring costs.

I bought 200 barcodes of eBay for £5 and not had any problems. Maybe they will be resold and they won't technically be mine any more. But as they will have been given an ASIN code by Amazon I don't really care..

Also, if you get brand registry with Amazon you don't need a barcode.
