Backlinks

Could someone in the know, please explain the different links to me, as I thought I had worked it out, but just had a really annoying sales call from a very agressive salesman from http://www.search-engine-promotion.eu.com/, telling me my site was rubbish and that I didn't have any relevant backlinks?

Does he mean reciprocal links or one-way links?

Any help would be appreciated, as this has got me all irritated!

Well he is wrong, you have hundreds:

http://www.google.com/search?q=link:http://www.bitsnstuff.co.uk/

http://search.msn.com/results.aspx?q=link:http://www.bitsnstuff.co.uk/+-site:bitsnstuff.co.uk

http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=link:http://www.bitsnstuff.co.uk/+-site:bitsnstuff.co.uk

By the way, if you have/get Firefox browser you can use this toolbar extension which will show you the backlinks for your site (or any other one) in Google, Yahoo and MSN with just one click:

Thank you for your reply.

So, backlinks are links to your site from others, whether one way or reciprocal? I have more links than that set up, so why would they not be showing on the Google search?

Sorry, I was in such a huff, I didn't read your reply properly, that does look better. :p

But still what is the distinction between all the link names, as it is confusing to a newbie?

And then next time, I get an unexpected sales call like that, I can tell him that I am not going to have a battle of wits with someone so obviously unarmed!

Apparently Google does not show all the links to your site any more for some reason :
http://forums.searchenginewatch.com/showthread.php?t=2423

reciprocal link = a link to your site from another site in exchange for a link from yours to theirs
one way link = a link to your site from another site without any link back to theirs
back links = all the above (all links into your site from other sites)

Basically the more links to your site from other relevant sites, the better - but one way (non reciprocal) links are better and the best link of all is a one way link to you from a high pr (pagerank) site with a theme/content relevant to your site and your most important keywords in the anchor text (the words of your link). Also a link in the Yahoo directory and the dmoz directory will carry more weight (authority) than just about other link so try and get those 2 if at all possible.

Hope that helps! :)

Incase you were wondering, google only shows backlinks to your site if the site linking to you has a PR rating (higher than 0).

As for these people cold calling you asking to do some SEO for you, tell them to p*ss off. Getting called up by an SEO company seems to be quite common (relative to other tech fields) and most of them either havent got a clue or they employ shady tactics, which can get your site penalised.

SEO is overrated in my opinion, its not a hard skill to learn.

SEO isn't the hardest skill to learn, but at the same time is misused because if results aren't improved in a week or so they are scrapped for different approaches.

There are some changes that can be made that can bring instant results i.e. a good change of title tag - but SEO for good keywords takes time.

Dreadlabs is right, many SEO callers are employing some seriously dodgy tactics, take your money, and then leave you crying in to your bank statement when Google penalises you for a year or so because of what they have done!

Hopefully Kate the advice in the previous posts has helped answer your questions but if not, and your still looking for some SEO help, why not sign up for my free SEO newsletter at http://www.c2webdesign.co.uk

By signing up you'll have access to all the past articles - which will hopefully give you some pointers and some ideas to put in to practise.
