How reliable are AVS checks (we use stripe) and we have had a few orders come in over the last few months with the following:

CVC check Passed
Street check Failed
Zip check Failed

At the moment we are inclined and do cancel these orders but are we doing the right thing here?

WE used to call any who failed the third man and speak to them about it, and suggest they provide another card or reason, sometimes they had moved or entered something wrong.
Caution is the correct thing to do its better to lose a order that to lose the cost of the order, the delivery and your time
The police and action fraud are a waste of time and the card companies have no interest in checking things so your on your own to make the call

As Chris says, if you are the victim of fraud, the police won't help you unless you have a single fraud worth over £20k. Maybe even then they won't. Action Fraud.....well, they are too far behind the crims to be of any use.

My advice is to call the customer and ask them to confirm some details. Usually, a fraudster gives a dead telephone number or they sound rather dodgy on the phone so you can weed them out.

A simple one is to ask them what product they have ordered and to repeat the billing address. Most often, they've ordered so much stuff in a short space of time with the stolen card that they can't remember what they ordered from you. A true customer obviously remembers what they've ordered because they probably spent time researching it.

Even if you are not sure and cancel the order, tell the customer you are protecting them and yourself from a possible fraud. I've never had any complaints.

At the end of the day, if it is fraud and you let it go, you are the one who will be stung - for the cost of the product, the cost of the packaging, the cost of shipping and the chargeback cost. A.K.A - It ain't worth it!

We decided to stay on the side of caution and cancel the order, we spoke to a rep at stripe and they have actually helped us put a fraud rule in place that is the Street Address and/or Postcode fail AVS the transaction will be declined.

I'd worry that you are being too careful, we get quite a few where its 3D secure and has passed it but address is different, most times when we querie it, they have recently moved house or card is registered at parents house etc, just an opinion that's all

We have set it so that if 3D secure is used and passed it will allow the transaction. At present its only of the Postcode or Address doesn't mach alone.
