Auto email with tracking number

How do these big companys send you a shipping/posted verification email giving you a parcel tracking number. Surely this is not done by the staff as it would be very time consuming. It must be done with some sort of software. Does anybody no?

Also when booking a courier, you usually enter the customers email address and the courier will email the customer with the tracking number
