You've never heard the true meaning of bigheaded until you've met me

Unfortunatly I sometimes come across as a wannabe know-it-all to older business people and people my age get pretty angry when I start picking at their ideas. A little while ago some other guy on the net the same age as me asked why I was being snobby and then started asking me how to do things since I apparently knew everything :( Which I don't.

I do notice it happens a lot with people who are younger and my age. People become a lot more confrontational when defending ideas. For example if a businessman gives a 16 year old guy advice on his business he would usually accept. However if someone of similar age did it he really wouldn't be very happy at all. I'm not just refering to me specifically either, I've seen it happen between many different people.

Dave, I agree with your comments regarding spelling, grammar etc but you come across as very discouraging sometimes. :)

I didnt understand Dave's post much myself unless he was just saying it as a general word of advice. As far as I'm aware me and Emma capitalised all our I's properly and have decent grammar at best :|

I do understand what cgigsnet means though. For every few young people who know business well for their age theres another hundred who dont.

I just think that sometimes whilst it may be hard to accept constructive critisism (check the spelling?), we need to be careful that we do not come across as negative towards the ideas of those just starting out in business. You never know, one of the people just starting out could be the next big shark that comes and bites your butt in later years :)

Just thought i'd let you know that I am going to try and forget this idea. I'm not the right person for this. Sorry if I wasted your time. Anyway, good luck Scott. I doubt I'll be on MSN again but I'll check up on you sometime. Have fun. You're really lucky that you have been given this chance to do what you really want!

Don't be discouraged. Only give up on your ideas if you are absolutely sure that they are a non-starter. I started with no website building experience, no ecommerce experience, little money and no idea of how to get up and running. Now I have a bit more knowledge on websites, loads of ecommerce experience, a bit more cash and plenty of idea on how to get a business kick started. HOW ? ....by keeping in touch on this forum, asking all the questions you need no matter how stupid you think they may be and by sheer determination to make a go of it. All obstacles can be overcome if you are willing to give it a go.

On the contrary. I meant that some youngsters should try to cut the habit of using "telephone texting" language and try to write their messages *reasonably* well. Note that I said *reasonably* well. They don't need to be word-perfect.

I am far from being an accomplished writer myself, but there have been a few occasions in my past where I have found that taking a little more care over written communication has opened doors to some very useful opportunities. People in high places just seem to trust you more. This is what I would like for our youngsters.

Now come along children, don your flowrey jim-jims and gather round me. We'll sing one more song before beddie-byes.....

Doh, a deer, a female deer,
Ray, a drop of golden suuuuuuun,
Mee, myself, I call myself,
Fah, a long, long way to ruuuuuuun,
...

:)

Ah children, you do indeed have a long, long way to run, but I know you'll make it.

This is quite true. I was totally unaware of what big headed meant until I 'met' you.

Everything you have said is so right, especially the thing about there being no money in fancy dress. Still, I shall try to get by on my pitful income and learn from your advice.

Craft fairs is something I was thinking about too but I have some problems going out .. just maybe.. hmm.. social anxiety I think. So, I could make the products to sell but can't be there to sell them. I don't have anyone to do this for me. Family can't do it either :p they promised they would but didnt lol

Emma,
Until I read this, I was going to suggest you go out and sell some of your products to get money to invest in your business. If you really can't face your buying public yourself, that will seriously damage you business prospects unless there's some other way of getting strong feedback from your customers and potential customers about what they will and won't buy.

You could do with a business partner who is a strong face-to-face seller. I know you said you have no friends, but perhaps now is the time to go looking for someone like that.

Channel your enthusiasm into doing things that will make your business work - avoid the temptation to sit in your own comfort zone. Good luck.

Emma. Although you don't realise it, you are probably capable of overcoming this. My younger brother suffered from this problem for a while in his early twenties.

After just one day of walking with me up and down Blackpool's Golden Mile, selling cigarette lighters to the throngs of holiday-makers for twenty pence each, the difference was amazing. The next day he was able to do it by himself while I watched from a pub across the road. On the third day I took him door-knocking around the shops selling signs, and he pulled about £600 in orders, and many friendly chats and cups of tea with some very nice shop-keepers.

His problem was that he had this silly notion that everyone was going to think he was some kind of clown for doing something which was slightly unusual. This is total nonsense. It is a phobia because the fear is irrational. It can be treated in the same way as, for example, aracnaphobia is treated by handling spiders.

As theMBA has suggested, having some front can be a very powerful tool for your business. When you think about it, most start-up businesses have more money than they think. This money is not in cash form, but rather in the form of spare time.

Hi Emma

I agree the Princes Trust is something to look at. If you are between 18 and 30 and unemployed then they can help. I know a few people who received help from them. There will be many hoops to jump through and this is a true test of an entreprenure.

Another option is to contact your local Chamber of Commerce, they can help guide you in the right direction. Otherwise a third option is to go into business with an experienced individual who shares your enthusiasm.

It is very important that you do the business plan. When approaching an investor or someone for advice you need to have done your homework and plan for every eventuality. This will say alot about you as a business person.

Dave I don't reply to every post so sorry if it seemed like I was blanking you. I have taken lots of advice on here and I respect the opinions of most the people here :).

As for spending a lot of time on here, its complex as I am quiet this week and I am doing the decorating for my parents so it means I am not always needed but I need to be in the house to raise a hand.

Hi Emma. I love your enthusiasm too and it's really good to dream and have goals - but reality has this funny way of bringing you down with a bump and that is when you need to think things through and plan a bit more. Starting small and building up is the best way, try not to be impatient (says she who is extremely impatient). Very best of luck with it, well done for having an idea and wanting to put it into practice - I wish I had started younger.

Well I wish this whole thing could be deleted. Also , there's no need to post this rubbish. Here is a chat room: http://www.social-anxiety-community.org/db/ take a look, if these people had problems to talk ONLINE there wouldn't be any messages. I haven't done anything to you but you blocked me on msn for some reason. You're just looking for a reason to block me but you couldn't find a real one, so you made one up so you wouldn't look so bad. It's easy to talk on the internet, because you're in control. All I came here for was some business advice. I offered to pay you for the website, that's not a freebie is it?

I'll do it myself

Good luck with your design, if I didn't want to work with you on a project I would tell you so and also give you some reasons why. I wouldn't just block you / hang up on you like a coward.
