Are you missing Business Link? For many start up businesses and SME's it provided valuable insight and resources. For many the training workshops and seminars were invaluable.

Having listened to a number of people we share a concern that the learning and development for self employed/ micro businesses just isn't there now.

Business Link just filled in happy forms. I do think however an organisation for micro business would be useful but it needs to be people who are passionate about business and are also successful.

Having advisors who themselves have failed at their own business and then jumped into public sector thinking it would be easier have not really added much value. They also had way too much money, most of it spent on self publicity telling the world they get ten pound back for every pound invested which is by the way not accurate.

In the private sector if an organisation does not solve a problem it doesn't last long but the problem with public sector is they don't have that mindset. Having public sector organisations self measure themselves against targets they make up just tarnishes all public sector groups with the same brush.

Yep I've been lucky enough to find a successful business person who I pay a reasonable fee for mentoring and its way more valuable than anything I ever got from business link. As you say it felt like a soft landing for failed entrepreneurs more than a service for supporting existing entrepreneurs
