Matter of preference. I prefer doing business with people so like transparency, (when choosing suppliers).

If it works for you, keep doing it. If it doesn't then look at changing it. I spoke to someone the other day who changed 1 thing about his online persona (using an online forum) - this resulted in a 25% increase in business.

Although every applicant should take responsibility for their applications i do believe the sites have a lot to do with it. Many have apply now and even shopping baskets where you can then apply with one click to a bulk of ads.....not in my opinion the way to do things!

I am always telling candidates to customise their cv or covering letter to a role and always amazed by how many dont already.

I just realised this was posted on the wrong thread! I was online via my phone and obviously posted in the wrong place - sorry for the spammy message!

I've come across a lot of forum members who seem to be hiding behind names that mean nothing and say nothing about them.

Now I can understand if you are currently in employment and are researching a new business venture in order to break away from that and become self employed. You wouldn't want your boss seeing posts on this forum with your name on.

But when it comes to people who already run a business, why not put yourself out there, business has changed it's more transparent. In all honesty hiding behind a meaningless name or avatar makes you blend into the background. I'm a human being you can even ring me up and talk to me (shock horror) :)

People relate to people so why not reveal yourself?

I Love Spreadsheets

Going to play devil's advocate here a bit

I fully understand the need for some people on here to hide their identity because of what they do and the threats they have received. I can fully understand that, I was the subject of a series of death threats from what we thought was Combat 18. It resulted in me and the family having to move home twice in 6 months when we thought we were in danger http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/538303.stm.

Although I'm not a paid up member I could also be classed as a member of the 4N cult which gets me a lot of business. There are a handful of people on there that hide their identities as well because of their work (Detectives etc).

So my two points/questions are

1. There seems to be far more hidden identities on this forum than any other business forum I frequent. Why is that? Is it just luck that a lot of people that need to hide their identity in one place

2. There also seems to be more long winded arguments and heated arguments on this forum than the others. Is this because there are so many people with hidden identities?

This is of course is just based on my perception of what I have seen, and I have never personally had any problems on this forum or any other

i wouldnt think it looks very professional, trying to run a successful business whilst using online forums to guage ideas and seek advice

I think that depends on what you were asking. For example if I was on here posting questions about how to do something with a spreadsheet, then yes that would look bad as that is my line of work. However if I was on here asking advice on marketing, employing people or accounts I dont think that will look bad for my business, in fact I think it will show the opposite - It shows I'm expanding or thinking of expanding.

Companies of all sizes need help, support and guidance at some point. There used to be whole government bodies to provide exactly the support people now get in these forums. In fact I suspect a lot of us on this forum provide direct support to other larger businesses who lack an expertise in certain areas.
