Apprenticeship Minimum Wage When Level 4

    I know apprentices get the apprenticeship minimum wage in 1st year of apprenticeship and get standard minimum wage if over 19 and in next year of apprenticeship.

    Does that year apply to the company though and if doing a higher apprenticeship (Level 4) is that classed as a 2nd year, even though it is 1st year with the company?

    It applies to the specific apprenticeship that the employee is on. So if on Level 3 and then Level 4 with the same company (or a different one) the first year at Level 4 can be paid at the apprenticeship rate.

    As I said, what matters is 'the apprenticeship. A training programme that moves from level 3 to Level 4 to Level 5 involves 3 different apprenticeships, each of which, I believe, can be apid at the apprenticeship rate for the first year at each level. An apprentice, moving employers during the course of the apprenticeship (which is unusual) should be paid as if they had not changed employers.

    Would that mean an employer could have an apprentice for 5 years and pay them the apprentice rate every year, by 1st putting them on a Level2 apprenticeship for a year, then starting a level 3 apprenticeship the next year, starting a level 4 apprenticeship the year after and then a Level 5 apprenticeship, rather than initially starting them on a 5 year apprenticeship at the begining?

    Apprenticeships take 1 to 5 years to complete depending on their level. A Level 6 or 7 apprenticeship may take 5 years. It depends on the LEVEL. An apprenticeship is at a particulr level, not a series of different levels. You cannot start a Level 5 apprenticeship if your skills/knowledge are at Level 2.

    In my lads case he didn't start via the apprenticeship route, he did 2 years at college to get his level 3 and has just started an apprenticeship which gets him to Level 4 after 1st year, then level 5 in 2nd year.

    He is more qualified than the other apprentices, but because they are in 2nd year of apprenticeship, they get the minimum wage rate rather than the apprenticeship rate.

    That sounds right. The rate has absolutely nothing to do with someone's qualifications.

    Looking at his contract, he actually gets paid quite a bit more than both the apprentice rate and the minimum wage rate £10.39 an hour (he's 20) He's just not sure if it will go up when he gets to 21

    They don't pay the minimum but base it on "National Agreement on Pay and Conditions of Service"
