Anyone put me in touch with a knitting yarn wholesaler?

Am banging my head against the wall at the moment as our current supplier doesn't have any flipping supplies!!!!
I have spent the past 2 years slowly building up a reasonably good selection of knitting yarns and accessories, we run a knitting club (to teach people to knit so they have no excuse not to buy our wool!) and have worked really hard to make this aspect of the business successful. Sales of wool have increased 60% over the past 3 months and I'm keen to maintain that growth.
Customers are no travelling to us from as far as Andover and Southampton which is fab ...... except our supplier keeps messing me about.
I have orders from customers for yarns they want, they've paid 50% deposit for and supplier initially told me no problem with delivery, should be 3 days - that was 2 weeks ago!
Last weeks excuse was the the shipment was held up in Bulgaria due to heavy snow, today the rep said there was a "problem at the warehouse" but when asked specifically had the yarn arrived in the UK yet he "wasn't sure" that it had.
I need a new supplier (in addition to the current one) but am having real difficulty finding details online - any one on here got any contacts they might be willing to share with me?

I presume the quantities needed are too small for China to be a possibility....?

Depends on what their quantities are really, and how competitive their pricing is. I'm particularly looking for scarf yarns (they knit up all frilly and gorgeous!) rather than plain double knits (DK) which I can get pretty easily.

What sort of quantities to people expect to supply you if you buy from China? Nice yarns are hard to get here so there would be a good market for it if I could get hold of it - also what is the quality like? That would probably be one of my main concerns. I'd be grateful for any info you might be able to give me.

    Hi Doodle

China is not always about quantity.

To work with factories, yes, quantities are needed as generally the factories are huge and there are always minimums.

However, the alternative, is to buy from the wholesale markets, which there are many.

The pricing will be cheaper to what you will buy from your UK suppliers, that I am sure of.

The added cost, which will affect your final pricing is the shipping, and this depends on the method of shipping, whether by air courier or by sea.

If you want, please send me a PM and I will liaise with you by email.

    Regards

Managed to source a distributor in Turkey where the yarns are manufactured, on Friday I ordered loads of gorgeous yarns not available through our UK supplier at a much cheaper price here, and the order was delivered here on Monday afternoon! Did have to pay £75 delivery but I've saved more than that on the UK prices so still a bargain.
    Very impressive!
Just have to sell it now :) We have our knitting club today so I'm hoping our ladies will be excited by what they see!

Don't discount China from your plans............It may be far away, but they are much more efficient than many UK businesses.

    It's all about variety.

    Happy selling

Hi hope you don't mind me asking but I was wondering how you managed to find the Turkish supplier direct, I'm having the same trouble lol (well trying to cut out the UK middle made if you like, as a lot of the yarns are made in turkey before being labelled and packed to be dispatched to the "official" uk warehouse from which they then distribute across the uk)

I still can't believe its been almost 3 years since she passed away. She was posting right up until 4 weeks before Cancer took her and she never mentioned it once to my knowledge. I still have one of her beautiful decorated glasses she gave me when I went to see her - and she gave me a quick glass painting lesson at the same time. She refused payment for both as we were fellow forum-ites. I believe her sister took over the business and the Facebook page seems to show it is still thriving. I think she would be very happy with that.
