I am thinking of starting a scrap gold business as a sideline, any advice would be welcome
Put lots of crappy adverts on TV and tell them you give them the best deal when really you pay a fraction of its value.

Another no brainer from Businessideas.
Do you even have any idea OP how to tell fake gold from un-hallmarked. A lot of gold that colmes from India & Africa in fact is not hallmarked. Yet it is still worth money.
Do you even have any idea how much gold you would have to buy and sell to make a few quid. Go into somewhere like cash converters or a pawn shop.
A handful of gold earring - thing bracelet's etc. fetch less that £50 quid. You might earn a fiver on that lot reselling as scrap.
Incidentally. Moist people trust pawn shops etc. What makes you think that anyone is going to send you their gold on the strength of a £5 quid domain name.
Frankly you would be better off in dealing in scap cardboard. Businesses have to pay to have it taken away.
As so no brainer but keep trying OP. One of these days you might just I say might just come up with a viable idea.
BTW. here are todays gold prices per grm. Starting with 9ct. Use yesterdays or tommorows and you could lose. Gold aint no game for fools.

I got the idea Gina as you said that you were going to run this as a sideline. Are you now telling me then that you plan to open a retail shop which is probably going to cost a min £10K to open. Another 500 a week to run. All as a sideline.

I have lots of "dosh" from my main business.
You describe yourself as a "business mentor" but it seems that in this case you have based your "positive" suggestions on your own biased opinion rather than on facts.

Upon the note about crappy tv adverts... I've not seen any for a few months?
The business idea must have been a good idea because of the number of adverts out over winter. However I feel the ship has sailed on this one... if you'd set up last year then maybe there would have been a good market to get into, now though I guess all the talk of recovery has put people off getting rid of their valuables to pay for petrol....

Thank you very much Jen, I think that you are absolutely correct in this, and I suspect that the reason that the advertisements are no longer showing, is that the office of fair trading have started to investigate the companies who operate throgh the post and through websites.

This is exactly why I think that a business model which is operated offline and offers local facilities to sell gold is now more viable than ever, because the competion from the tv ads and websites offering a postal service is dwindling.

I'm still not convinced there's a market there especially in a local area, so i'm out
If you do your market research and there is a market there then go for it. However there is somewhere in our town that offers to buy gold - is it the money shop? So it can still be competitive,
My main worry is that it was put in the OP that you were asking for advice and have ignored or argued anyone with concerns. It's not a problem if you've researched into it, but just be careful you're not pursuading yourself that it's a good idea when it's not. It's always better to listen and be impartial and face disapointment before going head, then face the disapointment after countless time (and/or cash) has been spent on it.

All I see is someone that claims to have 15 years experience in property and is trying to promote a door do door loans comapny type of franchise. You also seem to have difficulty in relating to actual facts such as the number of members on my business ideas site?? its actually; Members: 1167
I just dont know where you get your ridiculous assumptions from, but as for being any kind of business mentor, yes, you need to get your facts right if that is what you purport to be.
Patronising and trying to belittle people is not going to do them, or your reputation any good whatsoever. People will be reading this thread and judging for themselves whether you have managed to make any kind of sense or not, so I will leave it to them to decide.
My advice to you is that you must base your observation on facts, which is something that you have not ever done to my knowlege.

How much money do you you make from you Business Ideas web site or rather forum So OK you now say you have 1000 members or so. We recently had a speaker from the wildlife society an my local Rotary club. He has statred his own web site on the mating habit of a wasp and that has more members than yours. Ten times more in fact.

I make my money from the licenced home collected credit cash loans business that I run, I also operate a consultancy helping others to start in that business. Its no secret. You just couldnt be bothered to research the facts. I dont need to hide behind anything, and I certainly dont waffle.
You had to apologise for something you said which was total rubbish, there was certainly nothing gentlemanly about it. I can dig up the thread if you like.
The business ideas forum is incidental and is just a hobby for me

Why on earth would I care about impressing you?
You obviously know nothing about home collected credit if you think that it depends on lending out £20 here and there and collecting £1 a week, check out how much this market is worth in the UK, you might be surprised; although having said that, you would probably misread the figures
I might just start calling myself a "business mentor" it seems that anyone can do that doesnt it. At least I would be able to recognise a fact if it jumped up and bit me

I have decided to go ahead with this, and I will be opening a shop in the next few weeks. I will be going into town later this morning to see what shops are available.
I would like to know from forum members what would entice you into a shop to sell your gold, and what would put you off?

If I was going past a shop it would have to be something like "excellent rates" I suppose
However the main thing that would put me off is the fact that I don't have any gold lol... well except my wedding ring and he hasn't annoyed me enough just yet for that
I hate being generic and using stereotypes, but I have seen very smart posters at these kind of places that target particular ethnic backgrounds. ..... I feel a cultural debate about to erupt.......
However I guess other cultures tend to have more jewellery and gold that they would be willing to part with and others don't tend to keep more than the essential sentimental jewellery and primark accessories?
It's probably worth investigating your local community and the cultures within it and asking them the same questions.

As for available property in Hollyhead. There are are 3 properties available I gather. ( No need to thank me for my time. It only took about 45 secs - after I found me spec's that is )
1 is a cafe £25K premium and the are frightened to publish the rent and other a Fish & Chippie. About the sort of deal. As for the other. Why it's the good old Wollie store. A snip at £75,000 a year rent and another £25,000 rates.
Watch out guys here comes the next Mr Ratner or is it Miss Rothchilds.
