Why not use a simple bookkeeping package like VT Cashbook (it is free and very good)

Do be careful.

It's very easy to make a mistake with a spreadsheet and produce nonsense output, which will go unnoticed if it looks within range.

Don't know VT cashbook but I would imagine (hope!) that it has some audit/checking functions built in.

I wouldnt even waste your time messing about with spreadsheets, VT cashbook is free and so easy to use.

I am using a small workbook to perform my double-entry bookkeeping for a while.
The excel xlsm workbook is free and available on the website reedcompta.com

Don't use excel unless you really know what your doing - especially you have more than one bank account/credit cards/petty cash accounts etc.
Your better off using one of the free bookkeeping software out there. VT software is quite good.
