Just to finally address @David Griffiths points, David there were 15,000 cyclists in that event - would you really want to mix it up with motor traffic just for money?

This is a good point. People complain about cyclists being on the roads alongside cars, but also complain when they're segregated off in their own race.

There's also plenty of marathons, half-marathons and other annual athletic events which cause disruption to nearby roads and businesses. Stop one and you would have to stop them all.

I think these yearly events add character to a town/city and eventually bring in revenue to benefit the local residents and businesses as one.

Those who complain, neither take part nor see the long term benefits to the town as a whole.
Be better if all those involved did something usefull rather than strutting around in their skin tights frightening small boys.

I agree there are some bad drivers about but MY GOD there are some bad cyclists and bikers about too. Just this week I was overtaken at high speed, on a hard left hand bend ( I was doing 40) in rural Northumberland by a group of bikers who couldn't possibly see oncoming traffic. My pet hate with cyclists and I see this every day, is those who come up to a queue of traffic at a red light, mount the kerb, ride to the front of the queue, and go back on to the road so that when the light goes green, all the traffic is stuck behind a bloody bike.
Apart from that, yeah we had a crap weekend as well:(

The reason they do this is because the cars don't leave enough of a gap for them to get past them on the road. It's safer for them to start off from a red light at the front of a queue, this is why there is a green box with a picture of a cyclist inside at the front of most major junctions.

Most accidents occur when the cyclist is going straight on at a junction but a vehicle turns left on them. If you start at the front then this doesn't happen because a cyclist accelerates faster than a car from 0 to 10 miles per hour, essentially the cyclist has crossed the junction by the time the car has caught up.

If you rode a bicycle and didn't make your way to the front of the traffic lights then you would be increasing your chances of an accident. Don't blame the cyclists for trying to stay alive.

It is illegal to ride a bike on the pavement, the video I posted shows why.

Unfortunately the few spoil it for the many.

I have to admit to having complained to the police and the council about the use of the local A road for cycling events
they behave as if they own the road (the club that is)
they have the cheek to have bloody safety cars behind AND alongside (to stop cars overtaking presumably) on a dual carriageway which means we all have to travel 6 miles top the next junction at the speed of the cyclists.

As far as I am concerned it is illegal and dangerous.
