Hello,

I am in process up setting up on an online venture. I have been doing some reading around SEO, key focal points, implementation and other bits and bobs.

Are there people running web based business that can help with a few pointers on key dos and donts around a SEO strategy.

At the same time any SEO experts out there?

Appreciate all the good advice and help!

Regards!

From my experience when we started our website, if you're going to use a paid webdesigner/SEO company check them out thoroughly, look at past work etc. I used a company called evosite and was really happy with the work they did for me.

Also tried a paid adwords specialist to improve traffic "itscoldoutside", and to be honest found them to be a waste of time.

All Joking aside, there is a valuable lesson here and that is this.

TARGET YOUR READER!

You posted this thread originally in the general business area of the forum, and i can tell you now that that sort of slopiness and lack of attention to detail will harm your SEO efforts no end. :)

SEO/Internet marketing isn't rocket science, but it IS thinky work (done properly it is anyhow). You will need to plan your campaign of attack, otherwise you will end up getting poor results, or worse, harming your site rather than helping it.

A pre-requisite to SEO is understanding your business, your products/services, customers requirements, target clientele, catchment area and market.

Most companies who consistently fail with their SEO projects can't answer these questions. If you can't answer these questions then you can't do the necessary keyword research required to design, develop and promote your website.

The best advice I can give you is the know your business, customers and market inside out first before thinking about SEO. Once you have the answer to all these questions, everything else falls into place.

Which is exactly why people employ am SEM for,as there experience will be vastly greater in those areas than the average business owner.

Earl

I partially agree with your reply. It's an SEO consultant's job to ascertain the real requirements of a client. However it's not an SEO consultant job to create a business plan and run a client's business.

Corporates as well as small businesses can lose focus. Ideally the business plan is made clear before the marketing plan is created.

With small businesses, I spend a disproportionate amount of time as a general business consultant rather than an SEO consultant.
