Any good hosting companies out there (dedicated servers)?

Hi all,

I am looking for a new hosting company as our current host (Open Mind Hosting) have yet again, for the third time this month, failed and we have zero communication with anyone - leaving us without a site. Also we loose functionally of the site once back up and then have to roll back the site loosing a whole days data as a result, despite this problem has only ever existed once the server has gone down!

Our site takes up to £10,000 per day and therefore having the site down causes many problems in terms of traffic, sales and loss of confidence with existing customers trying to login.

Can anyone recommend a hosting solution for me (I also have a couple of small sites on the server)?

Over the last year we have had similar problems with a hosting company. I had everything migrated and hosted (via Rackspace) by a company called SEM Solutions that was recommended by word of mouth from a fellow business colleague.

I unfortunately can not post a link but if you Google them you will see them at the top.

It has been a breath of fresh air using them and its now one less thing to worry about!

Do you really need a dedicated server? Why not look at a Virtual Machine? It can be much more resilient and even faster if hosted on high quality hardware. I know the people at VMhosts (http://vmhosts.co.uk) and they use excellent hardware and provide a much more personal service than you are getting right now.

You probably need to spend more if you want high quality support.

One way is to buy/lease the hardware and use a third party company to install, maintain and support. We do that for a number of clients whose websites are business critical.

We use Nu Blue. Rarely any issues but if anything does crop up they are incredibly responsive. More than happy to recommend them.

To be clear on this point, we operate a 24/7/365 emergency telephone line which was manned over the Christmas period. In addition, the server issue was actually caused by Plesk not a fault of the server itself.

There shared hosting is good so Dedicloud probably will be good too but I don't know how it will suit your needs.

I have heard Rackspace are supposed to be good.

I wouldnt recommend rapidswitch they have the worst support ive ever seen

rackspace is a good one but no personal usage of them so only hearsay.

on a site like that make sure your using a external downtime tracker I use pingdom.

The best way to find a good hosting is google....When you find a good hosting company after that search in google for the reviews of hosting company.On Behalf of these reviews go for best hosting company....

I've never found reviews or recommendations from anonymous users very useful. It's impossible to tell what sort of service they have taken or what size of company they are. What suites a small business run from someone's back bedroom may well not suite a larger company with a million pound turnover.

Just in case anybody else is reading this thread for pertinent information relating to high traffic/exposure ecommerce sites, then I definitely think it's worth re-considering your budget.

If your online presence is critical to your business, then you should allocate a sufficient budget to that end. It's worth asking your hosting company "What if..." questions - so at least you know what your current hosting solution is good for. Not everybody needs that level of redundancy, and fewer of the people that ask for the redundancy actually want to pay for it when you tell them how much it will cost to implement.

For a business that takes up to £3m in a month on a website, spending 1/10,000th of those takings on your hosting solution is possibly worth re-considering. By spending a fraction more (comparative to what you're taking), such as £500-£1000 per month you could have a multi-server set up with master-master database replication with servers in separate datacentres and so on. If those servers then have RAID and redundant PSUs, you're then covering yourself for most types of common failure. Couple with a good backup/recovery regime, and an actual plan for disaster recovery and you're on your way to having a resilient hosting infrastructure.

Thanks Lee - A cloud solution should offer more availability and you could even scale out the service with multiple web front ends and seperate database servers.

Shouldnt cost any more than a dedicated server.

Isolated single dedicated servers offer far less availability.

Glad to hear it sounds like are working again though. Best bet is to chat with your provider to identify what caused the outage and see if there is anything they can offer to improve availability

As stated a couple of times now, this problem was resolved within about 20 minutes at about 11:30 pm on boxing day. The issue had nothing to do with our servers or infrastructure.

I'm not about to start discussing specifics of my clients accounts on here though...

There are multiple web host who provide reliable web hosting services, but to identify who is the best would be tedious. And one needs to be careful of sites like hostingcompanieslist.com as most, if not all of them are just affiliate driven - sites is there just to make profit off referrals rather than actually proving honest accurate information to users new to hosting.

Btw I just checked whois for hostingcompanieslist.com and see the domain is hosted by HioxIndia which is also ranked #1 in all of the categories at hostingcompanieslist.com directory. Many pick up on things like that.

I've been using Heart Internet for several years. Their support is great and their packages are competitive. I'd guard against cheaper hosting providers who sacrifice quality and support for the sake of keeping their prices down.

Really? Poor uptime/slow performance = high bouncerate = less sales. Shared hosting is cheap as it is £3-7/month. It pays to pay more than just £2 every month.

I've been a bit of a floater for a couple of years to this forum. I'd take a look at United Hosting as a company we've been using them for just over a year, would highly recommend!
