Well if you want to simply resize pictures you can use paint, but yea as both previously mentioned one is GIMP and there are tons of online tools. But if you asked me nothing can beat the good old photoshop. And if you need it for a short period of time then you can simply use the trial version of it.

For bulk resizing I use Fastone photo resizer. Dont know about optimising though.

This is a fantastic piece of free software, you can bulk resize pictures with ease and even anchor it so the x-axis or y-axis is always the same height. There are quite a few colour options as well but wouldn't every photo need to be 'optimised' individually?

2012 - If you're talking about optimising images for the web (to help page load times), Adobe Fireworks has the feature built in which is pretty good and you can get a month free trial I think. If the images are going on a wordpress blog you can use an auto-optimising plugin such as 'Smush It' - and I've just noticed they have a normal web interface which would probably suit you best - just google "Yahoo Smush It"..

My first post - HTH. :)

Smushit is OK but doesn't work on images bigger than 1Mb, - which might be the ones you want to resize and optimize?

(This is true for the Wp plugin. I don't know about other versions of the app, but as it is a Yahoo limitation it will probably apply across the board.)

This is true and can confirm the 1Mb limit is also on the wordpress plugin, I found it very rare an image was over 1mb. On the plus size it does highlight in red the images it couldnt compress.

If you want some software that is almost as good as Photoshop and really cheap, try Serif PhotoPlus. It offers batch editing and a whole lot more! It was recommended to me by a friend and its just excellent value for money, I think I bought it for £13.

Whenever I have a folder full of images that all need resizing ready for the web I use a free program called "TNGen" (sorry it won't let me post a link!). You can set the compression etc and it will automatically run through as many images as you have that need resizing. Saves your sanity as well as your time when you've got loads of images to resize!
